Hi.. looking for advice or feedback...My 4 year old has not had any speech issues pertaining to articulation. All of the sudden he has developed a bad stutter these past 2 weeks or so. I am curious why this has happened. There is a lot of information on this and many tell me it is normal but as a mom I worry and am looking to see if this has happened with anyone else and if there are any exercises/changes I can make to help or correct it. I guess I am a little overly concered because we recently had twins and though they are 5 months old now I automatically go to thinking that this recent stuttering may be emotionally related or has to do with his self confidence if that is even possible? I don't know just looking for some advice! Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Hi there!
My son went through 2 periods of intense stuttering, at 3 and at 4. He seemed fine otherwise, no other behavior or emotional issues to blame. I was told by several people that its his brain working faster than his mouth. The doc told me to always wait for him to finish what he was saying, never interrupt him, never finish for him, and if he breaks down during or after the stuttering, just reassure him he is ok. It does end, my son is now 5 and has not stuttered in over a year. They were just growing spurts. Keep up the good work mama!

Completely normal!!!

It's usually their mouth and brain operating at 2 different speeds. When it is happening ask him to slow down and take his time. all of mine did it to some degree or another, but my 7th son was the worst. It took some time and then one day it just stopped altogether.

My son did the same exact thing!!!!! He was about 3.5 when it started. I was SO worried. Doctor said it was totally normal. Their minds are moving faster then their tongues... He did it on and off for a few months and then it was gone!!!

My now 11year old son was a late talker (about age3) and developed a stutter ("disfluency" as his speech therapist called it) around 3 1/2....mouth couldn't keep up w/ all his thoughts...his speech therapist worked with him and he got over it....keep an eye (or ear) on the situation -- it may be a phase ...I've heard of some kids about your son's age going thru this kind of Phase...If it doesn't clear up or if it makes you feel better, get him checked out by a speech pathologist

Could be related to the new arrivals, in which case it should stop. I would give it a few weeks. Age 4 was when my son started stuttering right out of the blue. He still does to a slight extent; he went through many years of speech therapy. (He is 21 now; He also got a perfect score on his SATs and is a very smart kid, so don't worry that it has anything to do with development.) I would not try any intervention yourself -- Ask you pediatrician in a week or two-- they are the expert! In the meantime, I would not worry abut it.
