Swollen Lymphnodes in 4 Yr Olds Neck

Hi Mamas,

My 4 yr old has had 2 very swollen lymphnodes on one side of his neck now for over 4 weeks. I had him seen a while back and the doc said it's from an ear infection, prescribed antibiotics and that was it. A few weeks later I took him in again for a virus, he got bactrim and has completed that and still has the hard swollen lymphnodes.

So 2 different antibiotics within a month and still no change in the nodes. If I barely rub my finger over them he says "OW" right away and occasionally says "My throat hurts" which I'm guessing he's referring to the pain from the nodes.

I've scheduled him to be seen again tomorrow morning but very curious to know if this is common or should I be worried. I'm worried at this time since there hasn't been any change and when my nodes were swollen as a kid, it's because I was sick and they always went away within a few days. I also have a niece who has cystic fibrosis (a lung disease) and her nodes are ALWAYS swollen because her bodies constantly fighting infection.

He also occasionally complains that his tummy and head hurt which I find odd for a 4 yr old. What kind of tests can be performed that I should suggest the doctor do at tomorrows appt? They have done a CBC on him at the last appt and said everything was normal but what else can be done?? Thanks in advance for your help.

What can I do next?

That happens to my daughter when she is having upper respiratory issues, but they quickly go away. I have mentioned it to the pediatrician and was told it was a sign of an infection, but it shouldn't last for a long period. Regardless of his size, those lymphnodes shouldn't hurt to the touch. I would probably see an ENT.

I know I would get them a lot years ago because I had many ear infections, but once I started taking liquid silver, I didn't have any more problems.

My dr told me the same about the pea size is fine. Anything larger is reason for some concern. They should be looking at them more closely if they are large and are painful to touch. I believe the first thing is a painless ultrasound.

My son had a small lump on the side of his neck. It would swell when he was sick, and it was also sensitive then. I showed it to my Dr at our last well-appt. She said that it was normal and that because he was thin, it was more visible. She told me that when it becomes as big a the tip of your thumb, then it's a problem. Could it be that, like my son, he's on the thin side?

Swollen neck lymph nodes often are caused by throat or oral problems. If your pediatrician can't seem to find anything, checking with a dentist is a good idea. Tooth infections will always lead to swollen nodes over time.
Tonsils/adnoids are another common cause. So checking with an ENT might be another suggestion.

Try calling Dr. Campbell with 380 Family Dentistry if your pedi can't find a cause. He does offer free exams in the member perk section. ###-###-####

Just wondering how large they are. My pediatrician told me that if they're the size of a pea or smaller then it's normal. My son has had pea-sized nodes (several of them) on the sides of his neck (below the ear) since he was a baby and he's 5 now. I'm guessing your pedi already told you this, but just in case.
