The day that I ever get one and then it gets old and needs to be replaced. THAT'S when my kids will get something like that.
I'm noticing more and more tablets like the ipad, the kindle fire and such on the market. I'm wondering what age do you think it is appropriate for a child to have their own tablet (I'm not talking about using the family tablet or Mom/Dad's tablet).

My son who is 9 is getting one for Christmas. He did ask for a laptop, but we just can't afford one. My MIL has a Nook and he is often on hers and he really likes it. I found one on Walmart.com for real cheap, so if something should happen I won't sweat the money that was spent. My son took a technology class this past summer and seems to be real savvy with these types of electronics. If he wasn't mature enough I would not be getting him one for Christmas.
We got the kids Ematic Twigs for Christmas. They are a little better than my android phone and only cost $68-$70 each. They are online at Walmart.com. If your child loves playing games on your phone then I say they need one so they will leave your phone alone.

I'm with the first poster! My son gets hand me down electronics! I haven't had a tablet so neither has he! OTOH the laptop he uses suffered a serious injury so I'll probably be buying SOMETHING at tax return time-- just not sure what yet.....
I just bought my 3.5 yr old a LeapPad learning tablet.
He also is quite savvy with my iPad.
Our son, who will be 7 in January, is getting a Nook Tablet for Christmas. We decided to do this for several reasons:
1. Kids today are far more technologically advanced than we were at their age, so they need to have that technology available to them to help further their education.
2. He likes to play games on our phones, so this gives him his own device to do so.
3. He can download and read books on it. This helps him with not only learning to read, but also with future homework projects, etc.
4. He can access the internet with it. He can play learning games and do homework assignments on it on sites like SpellingCity.com.
5. It will help teach him typing skills.
6. He can watch movies/tv on it in the car by tethering it to our smart phones.
7. He can rent books from the library with it.
8. Mom will enjoy using it too.
In this day and age, I don't think any child is too young if they are showing an interest in computers. Kids are very advanced now and the sooner they get started, the better for them.
It depends on the child. Some kids are careful and computer savvy. One of my daughters could do things that computer techs could do at age 3. But some kids would have it broken lickity split.
I love computers for learning and I enjoy my tablet for all kinds of things :) I see nothing wrong with bringing a child into the new millenium.
My 8 yo can totally use/manage/master my husband's iPad....depends on the kid. O. thing to consider--the Kindle has the amazon platform so the apps are limited to what they offer. Also, you can "tether" any tablet to your smart phone so they can have internet access "on the go"!
