Tailbone Injury

I went rollerskating 3 1/2 weeks ago with my children and fell on my tailbone really hard. Since then it has hurt extremely bad and I am unable to sit comfortably and wake up several times at night. The first 2 days I put ice on it, and now I am using a heating pad 2x a day as well as sitting on a "doughnut" to keep from further hurting it. Has anyone gone thru this and how long did u have to endure this before things got better? I feel like a knife is being jabbed in the lowest part of my back, OUCH! Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. :o)

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your responses. It is starting to get better. I ended up getting some back & body medicine and Advil PM so I could actually get some rest. I took it for 4-5 days and now I am felling a bit better. If it doesn't continue to feel better I will definitely be looking into a chiropractor. I appreciate all your help. Thank you all!

Go to a chiropracter. My tailbone was out of whack for more than a week. After my chiropracter's appointment, I was back to myself. I had actually "broken" my tailbone and it took an adjustment to fix it.

Good luck.

Hi J., I can truly appreciate your pain. I dislocated my tailbone while giving birth to my daughter. It has no been three and a 1/2 years now and I am finally getting better. But long story short, ditch the donut contrary to popular belief it provides no support for this type of injury. Find a pad that has a cut out for the tailbone area. If you are willing to get one that costs a little more you can continue to use it after you feel better. It will keep your back from hurting over time. Second is to contact your doctor and have an x-ray done to see if you broke it, dislocated, or if nothing else you severly bruised the area. If the pain persists seek out a pain management doctor to help you live with the pain and last but not least there are very specialized physical therapists that deal with women only that can help eliviate the pain and help you increase the strength of your pelvic floor. Those exercises will tone from your waist down to your tippy toes. I wish you the best of luck and god speed in the healing!! If you need anything more please feel free to contact me. After three years of having people look at the most sensitive areas and ask odd questions I am no longer embarassed to discuss any part of this. :)

My brother and I were "jitterbugging" and he dropped me on my tailbone from about 4 feet in the air. I went to a chiropractor and had it x-rayed. Luckily, the tip of the tailbone was not broken off, just knocked out of place. He was able to pop in back into place (yes, it hurt when he did it and I cursed at him, lol) and I was well in 2 days. I've heard that it can take months for it to feel better without having in fixed. You should get it checked out!!!

Been there done that! Fell down some icy stairs on to our rock patio a few years ago.
There really isn't much they can do for it and eventually it got "better". But it still bothered me especially if we were traveling and I had to sit long periods of time. I've found going to a chiropractor helped the most.
Good luck and in good health,

I did a similar thing and chipped my tailbone. If you haven't already go see a neurologist or an orthepedic doctor or eveb your family doctor and have it x-rayed. It could just be bruise but your spine is import, and take it from someone who broke her back in two places and has spina bifida in her lower back and neck, it is best to check it out. Good Luck!

Oh I feel your pain! I broke/dislocated/hurt my tailbone birthing my son. Unfortunately the doctors were anything but helpful and said if it still hurt in a year to come back! I am going to a chiropractor and that is actually helping (the first thing that has actually helped in 2 1/2 years). The doughnut did not help me at all--instead I needed to sit on really hard surfaces and balance my butt-bones on the chair to not put pressure on it. Maybe see a doctor, but if you get the same useless advice I did go, see a chiropractor.

Aw man!!! I feel your pain! I was a cheerleader in HS and was constantly getting dropped...as a result, I swear I spent all 4 years in pain - not ever being able to sit normally in a chair. It took forever for me to heal, but I'm imagining that is because I never really gave it a rest! Hang in there, the worst thing about this type of injury is you kind of just have to wait it out. Bummer! Hope you feel better soon.

Chiropractic or craniosacral therapy is your best bet once fracture has been ruled-out via x-ray. I'd also advise looking for a chiropractor who can do gentle adjusting, just my opinion. Don't wait too long for it to get better. The tailbone has direct connections to the dura around the spinal cord and brain, and tailbone injuries that are not healed can cause lots of other problems.

Good luck. I hope you feel better soon.

my son fell while skating (age 16) & the xray showed a fracture in his lower back. He had specific exercises & other instructions which greatly aided in healing. See a doctor & get an xray!

I agree with those moms who mentioned a chiropractor. We have a friend who is a chiropractor and he has had to fix his wife's tail bone before when she fell down the stairs. Looks like you might live too far away to see him. Don't know how far Carthage is from Blue Springs. Our friends office is in Blue Springs in the Club & Fitness Center(he is inside the gym). The name of the practice is Above All Family Chiropractic, LLC., Dr. Scott Hollis D.C. and his phone # is ###-###-####. Hope you get better!!

Hi J.,
After 3 weeks, and still in so much pain, I would go to a doc and get an x-ray. Sometimes, there is nothing to do about a broken coccyx (your tailbone), but there are ways to "manipulate" some fractured ones and get them back into place (but you want it done by an MD who has done it before!!!)

Good luck!

OMG, I feel your pain. I fell while moving one time; slipped and fell on concrete while it was raining. My husband had to pry me off the concrete because I was laying there for a good 10 minutes in the rain. Couldn't move. Two days later we were off to Costa Rica on a backpacking trip. Can you imagine sleeping in a tent, on the ground, with that injury? Needless to say I hardly slept. I was absolutely miserable and I can honestly say that I've never been in so much pain in my life. I felt like part of the bone must have chipped off. Unfortunately, it took a few months (maybe 3?) to heal. You might want to give your doctor a call and see if there's anything you can do to make yourself comfortable. I wish I had more answers for you, just know that I can definitely empathize.
