Taking a TN/KY Roadtrip/where to Stay, What to Do

Hi-in early August my 14 year old daughter and I are flying in to Nashville, driving to Knoxville, stopping at some friends in Roanoke, looping up to Lexington, KY and possibly Louisville before flying out of Nashville again. Would anyone have suggestions of a good inexpensive hotel or B&B and quick sights to see. I think I'm in for a lot of driving, but we only have a short time frame in which to take this trip. Thanks for your help!

Definitely Caryville, TN (just north of Knoxville - would be on the way to Lexington/Louisville). It has Cove Lake State Park. We stay at a Hampton Inn there which is on a hillside overlooking the lake and has llamas on the premises. It is only $80/night with AAA. Whatever you do, I'd steer clear of Pigeon Forge - I just found it really touristy and couldn't wait to get out of there. If you like that kind of thing, there's lots to do - I just personally would rather visit a State Park.

I recommend going to Louisville for sure! It is beautiful. Sorry but I have no advice beyond that!

A really cool thing to do is to take a tour of a horse farm. Three Chimneys is right outside of Lexington and is so beautiful. The tours cost only $5. Here's a link: http://www.threechimneys.com/tours/

M.-

We were just in the Knoxville area on Memorial Day. We rented a home on the lake (Lake Norris). It was affordable, but we had 6 adults sharing the cost (still reasonable). Try to visit the Smoky Mountains. They are beautiful and if you leave TN and head to KY go through the Cumberland Gap. You can drive under the mountain in a tunnel which the kids will like and once on the KY side drive to the top to see a view of KY, VA and TN. It's amazing.

Enjoy.

Lots of places in the Smokies, too. Lots of crowds around Gatlinburg, but there are less congested places.

If you're going through Knoxville, I would say definitely spend some time in the Smokies. Gatlinburg is just outside of Knoxville and is a cute little town at the foothills. There are tons of cheap resort type hotels in Pigeon Forge, which is just next to Gatlinburg. The tourism industry has been hit hard there, so they're practically giving away hotel rooms. The mountains are awesome, so I would definitely try to find time to do some exploring with a picnic lunch somewhere nice in nature... Also, in the Knoxville area is the Museum of Appalacia, which is amazing and so full of history.
