Taking down Bedrails

I was just wondering what age other moms took down their kids bedrails? My daughter is 3.5 yrs and sleeps in a twin bed against the wall. We have a bed rail on the side but she doesn't seem to need it and it gets in the way since it's not one that gets tucked under the mattress. I just didn't know if 3.5 is too young to take it down. When we visit my mom, she sleeps in a twin bed without one and does fine. But I'm looking for some thoughts from other parents as to what age they thought was appropriate or got rid of them. Thanks in advance : )

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I thought it would be ok, but I guess I just wanted reassurance that I wasn't rushing it. I'll tell her about it and see how she reacts. She uses them mostly to climb on at this point so she will probably miss that more than anything.

I ended up taking it off Sunday morning and she has slept the last 3 nights without it and she has done fine. I've always checked on her before I go to bed so now I just move her closer to the middle of the bed if she's near the edge and put a few pillows on the floor just in case. She was ok with the transition : )

Never had a bed rail for either of my kids or any of the daycare kids who slept here. Never had a problem. Havent used one for my grand daughter in my bed for her naps or on the couch. She hasnt fallen off yet. Id say 3 is plenty old enough to go without and be able to just get back up and into bed if they do roll off. If they never have the railing, they learn to sense the edge of the bed sooner and dont fall. (o:

Take the rail down. If you're worried about it, stack some pillows or something else soft next to the bed for a few nights just in case. I think it's age appropriate.

We just converted my grandsons crib to a toddler bed and he's doing fine without any rails. He's been sleeping in our beds with us sometimes without any problems. Most of my kids started sleeping on beds between 1 and 18 months.

We never used bed rails... so 20 months is when we converted from a crib to a bed. One of my daughters fell out a few times (we had pillows on the floor) but got the hang of it in about a week. The other never fell out.

I'd say you're just fine at 3.5, especially if your daughter can sleep in a regular twin at your mom's house.

I think we took our daughter's down around that age...and for about two years after that, we put pillows on the floor, just in case. Not once did she fall out of bed (and she, like yours, was in a twin next to the wall.) Go ahead and try it...I would just suggest you get HER approval first. She probably doesn't need it, but if she wants it to feel safe, really, no harm.

If she doesn't need it, take it down. It's there to keep her from rolling off the bed but since she doesn't roll off the bed and it's in the way why leave it up.

Yes, she might roll off but if that's your thinking you'll have to leave it on forever. And, even if she does roll off, at 3 1/2 she's sturdy enough for it to not hurt her. 60 years ago we didn't have bed rails. I doubt than any kid was hurt rolling off the bed. None of the children I knew were. and my grandson fell off his bunk bed in spite of the railing and just climbed back into bed. Didn't hurt or even scare him.

Sounds like it is time to take them down. At 3 1/2 if she falls out of bed,
she will just surprise herself, not get hurt. They are pretty tough at that
age.

She'd probably be just fine-but I could not stand the thought of her bumping her little head!

I think it depends on how restless a sleeper she is, and whether she would get back in bed and fall asleep on her own if she rolled out. You could take it down and put a couple of large pillows or couch cushions on the floor for a week and see what happens.

I was just thinking about this myself actually. I have almost 5 year old twin girls who share a full size bed. One of the girls asked me when I would take the rails away. They both move around a lot and their bed is high so I get a little worried about it. They have both slept with me in my bed and not fallen out, at least recently so I could take them off and see what happens. You could try taking the bed rail off and if she does okay, great, if not, put it back on.

I think you have answered your own question. "She doesn't seem to need it and it gets in the way". Each child is different, only YOU know what is best for YOUR child. Seems to me you belive that she is ready to lose the bed rail but are looking for validation in doing so. You've got my vote :-)

I don't have an answer because I have never used bedrails. My mother took us from a crib to a twin bed and that is what I did with my kids.

I think it goes by the child. In fact, my youngest child got rid of her bedrail before my oldest child - and my oldest agreed. My oldest is a WILD sleeper and probably could even use a bedrail now at the age of 11 - but her bed is only 2 inches off the floor so there's no danger. My youngest probably never needed a bedrail - she falls asleep in one spot and stays there all night. So go by your daughter.

we took our daughters rail off at 5 1/2 i think. After falling out of bed a couple times, she wanted it back on. It's been a yr & if we forget to put it up, she asks/ tells us to. I'd just assume to leave it, as she's on medicine for seizures.

My ds was 3 when he was moved to a twin bed and I used a body pillow on the edge of the bed. Didn't need to leave it there long, never had much of an issue with him falling out of bed, more for my piece of mind.

I just thought I would add what we did. I think the twins were 3 1/2 or 4 when we took the rails off. Both of their beds are against the wall but they move around a lot. Both of them have fallen out of their beds more than once and one hit her face on her little plastic trash can next to her bed. So now I make sure there is nothing on the floor beside the beds that they will fall on and we check on them every night right before we go to bed to make sure they aren't close to the edge or hanging off the side of the bed. If they are, my husband or I will move them over. They are 5 1/2 and they still need to be moved over quite often.

My daughter is 4 and still just feels more secure with her bed rails on. I figure we'll take them off when she asks since they aren't doing her any harm!
