Taliesin West--Phoenix Residents And/or Frank Lloyd Wright Architecture Buffs

I am making a quick trip to Phoenix this weekend, actually Scottsdale, accompanying my husband on a business trip. I will have a small window of time to myself Saturday morning. Since the weather has been so awful here I might just take a walk in the sun or hang out by the pool. However, I have some interest in Frank Lloyd Wright and his architecture and am curious about touring Taliesin West. A few questions: is the tour worthwhile and recommended in lieu of leisure time by the pool? We are staying at the Royal Palms in Scottsdale. Taliesin West is also in Scottsdale, but apparently a 25-30 minute drive from the resort. How is that drive and how is traffic in Scottsdale on a Saturday morning? I'm not a huge fan of driving in unfamiliar cities. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Unfortunately, I did not make it to Taliesin West. I had hoped and planned to visit, but I had less time on my own than I thought I would and I did not have a car available after all. The people in our group who arrived the day before I did and were able to visit Taliesin West really enjoyed it and recommended it. Now I have an excuse to go back again and hopefully next time I can fit it in to the schedule!

From the Royal Palms, on a Saturday morning, it would be an easy drive with a quick hop on the freeway or by taking surface roads. However, I would probably opt for poolside relaxation. We wanted to tour Taliesin last year, but the tours are expensive and very limited in what you actually get to see. One fee to tour part of the grounds only, one to see one or two rooms, etc. All are guided and short. Check out the tours on the website and that should help you decide if the cost/time is worth it to you.

You can sit by a pool anywhere. Go see a piece of history.

I haven't been there, but the guided tour of FLW's home and studio (illinois) is phenomenal. I suppose it may depend on the guide, but seeing his work from the inside is engaging and cool for sure. I'd opt for that if the price is right.

I have done the tour three times...I really really enjoyed seeing the facility...my favorite tour was the one with my five year old son in tow... the docent asked if anyone had questions and he raised his hand...then asked, "Why are you talking so much?"

I would go if you have the chance!!

It's not going to be bad. I'm from Scottsdale :) I've only did that tour once and it was at least 10 years ago, and I'm sure it has changed over the year but from what I remember it was pretty cool.
