Any advice on teen son with ad/hd, I cannot find a therapist we like, he does not want to be on medicine anymore, he has been on meds. since he was in 3rd gr. and he is in his first year of high school getting almost all D's and F's I have met with the teachers, they do not seem to want to help much. Any advice at all? I don't feel like I know how to help him anymore, I can't seem to get through to him how important school is. We have taken all his privlidges away from him until he gets his grades up, but he doesnt even seem to care.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hello all, Thank you for all your kind words of advice. Things are starting to look up. Meeting with the school again on Monday, with the special ed teacher and social worker. Hopefully they can come up with something to help him. He trys out for the basketball team in a couple of weeks. I have considered getting him in tae kan do, I heard it can help. I think it is expensive though. He also played guitar, but that too is expensive and he would not ever practice so we quit paying for the lessons. Thank you agian.

Ok first off make sure you check out his diet and tell him straight lets start there. Get him into some sort of sport he can burn his energy off. Warn him about sugar and corn syrup and yellow food colors at school

Why should he care, he has no privileges? He is probably frustrated every day and has nothing to look forward to, probably a little depressed about his situation, probably feels like he will never get his grades up, so why try? Find another therapist. Start small in the rewards department... help him create structure with studying, help him create short term and long term goals, and ways to meet them. Is he is in Karate, Swim team or Boy Scouts or anything? Activities like that can often help. Make sure he has a healthy diet and sincerely talk to him again about the importance of his meds.

He has it within his control to do well?

I failed every English class my eighth grade year just to prove the system would pass me anyway...

I can tell you that people with ADD can do anything! they put their minds to. The problem is only they have control of their minds.

Message me if you have any specific questions. I have managed to raise two of them to be viable members of society and another two in the works. :0

Would he be willing to homeschool and learn a trade? Not everyone is cut out for traditional school.

Just a thought . . . I wouldn't enter into the above idea without a solid plan.

Good luck.
