Upping the spousal support is wrong. Tell her to apply for SSI if she has a medical condition. If they don't approve her, she is not disabled enough to use that as an excuse not to work.
Thanks to all of you who responded to my cry for help. I have taken all your suggestions and will get working immediately. I guess I'm asking again; however, it is for my BFF Luanne. She has been receiving child support for many years and has come to really need this as she is only able to work part time due to a medical condition. She received a letter today stating that her child support is over, so what she would like to do is up her spousal support. She has very limited funds and really doesn't know where to turn. Do any of you fabulous moms have any ideas or great suggestions. She is just too upset to ask for herself so I thought I might be able to give her a little help. Thanks so very much.........S. W

doesnt the letter say to the effect that she needs to respond within a certain amount of time? is the child going to college? in her response she could say shes enduring hardship and needs to upgrade the alimony. there are programs out there and even the court volunteers could steer ur friend in the right direction as to what papers she needs.
I'm afraid I don't undestand the reason she would be able to increase her spousal support? I don't understand the reason that it was paid so long. Unless her disability was caused in some way by her ex, ????
Social Security has a disability program. If her "disability" is medically proven, she may qualify for disability income. She should go online to check with Social Security to see if she qualifies.
She should seek her doctors help in seeking disability through SSI, whether it is a physical or mental health issue. If this has been on-going, she maybe able to see about retro disability also. I am presuming her child support ended because the children turned 18 or custody/living arrangements changed. I think she will feel better receiving the financial support for her disability, than relying on her children's father.
Best wishes to her.
