The Cheapest Way to Fille Taxes

Go to the IRS website and see if you qualify for freefile. I personally like the esmarttax site. I believe they have a sliding scale on income for filing cost also but not sure. State tax is not free or reduced though.

I'm a huge turbotax fan. There is a free online federal program that you can use at turbotax.com. If you don't itemize and just take the standard deductions you might be able to do it just reading the instructions. What I like about the purchased turbo tax it is very thorough and helps you find your deductions. I haven't found this to be the case with the free program/s, including the free turbotax.

We use taxactonline.com and it is free to file, if you aren't filing state taxes or do not need other special features.

You can file for free through the irs website if you make under a certain amount.

You can always file via paper for no fee - the only cost is the postage.

Turbo Tax does have a free version, but it's only for people who qualify for the 1040 EZ version.

Honestly, we all have tight expenses right now, but with taxes, spending the money to have them completed correctly may actually find deductions you aren't aware of and save you money in the end. I'd Google tax preparation services in your area. Sometimes there are free ones at libraries you might want to check into.

goto IRS.gov and check out the efile section. I believe the cutoff for free filing is like $57k.

I 'paper-filed' my taxes this year - only cost the stamp to mail them in - though I did use TURBO TAX to double check my figures. It didn't cost me anything to use the service just to double check - only costs if you plan on filing with them.

I use TaxAct online. It's easty to use, free to file federal forms, and I do the state forms, but file them free via my state's website online, just checking to make sure the numbers match!
