The Dreaded Belly Pouch

I have had this dread belly pouch since god 18 maybe? First a thyroid issues caused my once flat belly to balloon. Then the medicine to correct the thyroid issue caused more belly fat. Then the two kids that followed added to the pouch.

I’m not sure how to get rid of it. I absolutely hate it! I’m hypoglycemic so I attempt to eat every 2 hours. I try to make sure it’s something healthy like yogurt or fruit. But I also tend to forget to eat. I take my 20 month old for a walk almost every day. We also spend a lot of time outside when the weather is nice.

Exercising is tough for me. I have such trouble following through. I can make the time but I tend to forget to do it. Does anyone have any tips or advice on how to get rid of it?

What can I do next?

Can you join a gym where you might be able to take classes. Some of them have nutrition classes as well. I know with little ones it can be hard. Know you are not alone! I was very skinny when I was young. And even after my first child I didn't gain much weight till my husband and 2nd child came along. We tend to get less active as we have children. Not to mention I sit at work all day long. I have back problems which does not allow me to do much exercising.

After our babies, I did special exercises that really targeted my core - it's like zippering up a zipper (if you think of a pair of pants) that helped a lot. Those and pelvic tilt type exercises, and losing any belly fat through aerobic exercise. Just up your walking length and endurance. Eat afterwards and more than a snack.

Up your core strength training (buy a ball if you don't have one and google exercises).

If that doesn't cut it, the only way to rid that pouch is surgery. Most people don't have to go that drastic unless pregnancy caused real damage to the underlying muscle. Usually strengthening your core muscles will result in a noticeable difference. The key is locating those and working them.

Your physician or PT can help you locate them if you find it hard to find them. It's a very small movement (to clench them). It's not like doing a regular sit up.

Good luck :) I agree - an exercise buddy is really motivating!

are you overweight overall? if that's the case then diet to a large degree and exercise to a lesser one will help. but it sounds as if you're already eating well to accommodate your hypoglycemia.

exercise is always a good and healthy thing to do, and you can certainly tighten and strengthen the underlying muscles, but you can't spot reduce.

if the pouch is deflated skin and not actually fat, you may have no recourse but surgery.

i have the double whammy, a heavy belly AND saggy pouch. i try not to engage in body hatred, but it's hard to love my midsection.

Aging brings slower metabolism and there's no shrinking stretched out skin.
Diet and exercise can only do so much.
If you are a fairly good weight and still have pouches of fat that just won't budge no matter what you do then liposuction or tummy tuck are your best bets.

find a friend that is willing to be an accountability partner. someone who will remind you to workout, remind you to eat healthy. even working out with you would be fun. reach out to your friends and see if anyone is willing to join you in a fitness quest.
if no one near you is willing try my fitness pal and reach out to people there, it also helps to trac your workouts, and food intake.

Does your doctor say that you need to exercise and lose weight, or is this purely cosmetic (you just don't like how it looks)? If you need to lose weight and/or exercise to be healthy, I suggest either finding a walking buddy or signing up for a class. I am personally really bothered by "wasting" money, so if I sign up for a class, I usually go because I do the math, figure out the cost per class (usually about $10) and tell myself that each class I miss is no different from throwing $10 in the trash. I wouldn't throw $10 in the trash, so I'd better go to class no matter how tired I am in the evening.

If this is not for heath reasons but strictly cosmetic, I urge you to accept yourself. I too have a belly pouch, although I am very healthy in general. I do kickboxing and if anything I am close to underweight on the doctors BMI chart and yet because of my pouchy belly, I someone once asked me if I was pregnant (at work! Who does that!). I was distressed and posted something here and got great advice about accepting myself and learning to dress for the body I have instead of buying clothes for the body I wish I had. I went to a thrift store and tried on lots of pants and different styles of tops to find things that are flattering. For pants in particular, I will just say that anything low-rise is a disaster for a pouchy belly. No matter how cute they look on the hanger or on the mannequin in the store, pass them by! It can be hard to find clothes that look good on adult women, but it can be done. Good luck!

The belly needs HIIT and interval training. 10 minutes a day. You will see vast improvements.

To create a habit, pick a time that will work almost every day, create a chart, and keep track of your progress daily.
