Thinking About Doing Bento Lunches for My Kids

I hate the lunchboxes available to us -- they cost a small arm and a leg to get the latest hero, are poor quality, and get so dirty and grubby. I waited to get a sack from Land's End on sale, and they are durable, but the outside canvas is so dirty!! The Japanese bento boxes look cool -- anyone do this, and have suggestions for where to get supplies in the Pittsburgh area? Looking to keep it simple and inexpensive. Looks like a fun way to do lunch for the kids to me. (I have two young ones, three and a half and 21 months.)

What can I do next?

J., I haven't had much experience doing the bento thing but I have been interested in it for a while. My daughter is two and a half and currently gets lunch at school but I found this terrific website for kids lunch: http://lunchinabox.net/

She gives tips about how to prepare things quickly, cost effectively, nutritionally and beautifully. Plus she has links to buying the different things you might need. She has lots of container ideas.

And lastly, have you seen the laptop lunch box? She has a link to it on the right hand side of her blog page. Very cool.

Hope this helps!

Good luck.

I guess you'd be giving up the cool look if you did this but it would be simple and inexpensive: stacking up different sizes of tupperware, as needed. You'd still need a little backpack or something to put them in. I always bring my daughter a sandwich in a flat tupperware at Kindergarten pickup and lately the little boxes seem to be stacking up in the car when we have lunch on the fly. Would be interested, too, in bentos. Wouldn't any big housewares store be likely to have them?

Sur la Table has some-- I wasn't thrilled about them, but you could look there.

Bento Boxes have been a popular choice for some time now. Sounds like a good alternative.
