Throat Queston

My 8 year old daughter keeps getting these whiteish/yellowish growths on her throat. We thought that she had strep, and the doctor assured us it wasn't strep. It was some kind of virus. (This was last fall and We went to a walk in clinic at the time) She can pick these things off her throat, and it doesn't hurt her. It's just very annoying and looks gross. They are mostly on her tonsils. She has 1 or 2 everyday. Has anyone ever heard of this before?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

You guys are great! I checked on the website http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonsillol
That someone had sent me and that is exactly what she has. It really is gross, but she deals with it. I will try to get her to rinse her throat out and try some mouthwash etc first. If that doesn't help then I will call the Dr and see about removing her tonsils. Don't want her to go thru surgery if she doesn't have too. Thanks again for all your responses.

It sounds like she has pitted tonsils. Time for an ENT referral. I always refer my patients to Greg Rohn, MD at Presbyterian Plano. He is fabulous!

It could be a yeast infection. no sugars, white flours, etc. for a while. lots of yogurt + acidofilus/probiotics. might need something for it. call the nurse. good luck!~C.~

I believe they are "tonsil stones". Its caused by drainage (post nasal drip). They are harmless, however, very stinky. They can cause bad breath, too. My sister and I always got them as kids. We called them "milk curds" :) They are harmless. The tonsils collect the drainage in their crypts (the crevices in the tonsils) and form the "stones". Hope this helps.

I remember something like this when my son was an infant, the DR called it THRUSH and gave us some type of anti viral liquid to clear it up.

it was a very long time ago, as my kids are now ages 18 to 12, so treatment has probably changed. Its a yeast infection in the mouth, I think.

Good Luck!

My understanding that it is just from drainage. I have that sometime and it is gross. It has a horrible odor. I don't think it is anything to be concerned about.

Don't deal with walk in clincs or a pediatrition. Find a ENT in Denton that is on your insureance and go to them. They are the ones that know more about that area of the body than anyone else.
Good Luck.

You might look into information about yeast also called Candida. It likes to grow in warm, moist, dark places. Babies get it and it is called thrush. Hope that helps! C. M.

I am not a doctor, but it sounds like her tonsils are doing their job. If you have any kind of allergies and sinus drainage, your tonsils catch stuff and (like an oyster) let it build up until you can see it. You may want to take her to a pediatric doctor just to be sure, but it is probably nothing to worry about.

Hi B.,
You may want to check out a product called transfer factor. It is a natural molecule that teaches the immune system to recognize and fight off virus, bacteria, mold fungus and parasites. So whatever it is that your daughter has it helps the body get rid of it. If you want more info on this go to www.clive.my4life.com or email me back and I will provide other resources. It is much better to get to the root of the problem and correct it than to just remove the tonsils as many have suggested.

I started having this same problem a few years ago and was finally grossed out enough to go to an ENT and he said I needed to have my tonsils out. After the surgery I immediately felt better (had been having toms of sinus infections for years) and did not have this issue any longer. Good luck!

I had this when I was around 12 - 13. i remember it being pretty disgusting. My parents ended up having my tonsils removed. Other than that I don't remember what caused it but that took care of the problem.
