I have a great difficulty in swallowing carbonated beverages now. I choke almost every time. It doesn't happen if I use a straw, only if I drink straight from a can, bottle, cup, etc. w/o a straw. I get acid reflux now a lot more than before my thyroid messed up. I don't really remember having reflux before come to think of it but could be mistaken as it's been almost 9 yrs since my thyroid messed up. I'd just avoid what makes you sick, sometimes we hafta give up something we used to could eat or drink as we get older or due to medical conditions. Good luck!

I used to take synthroid but I switched to levoxyl for monetary reasons. I have not suffered from this with either drug.Though I don't drink soda much, diet or otherwise. My mother takes synthroid and has no issue either.

Your stomach problems may be unrelated and completely coincidental to taking this medication. I did a little research and came up with a few possibilities.

If the soda you're drinking is non diet, you could be in the early stages of diabetes and should get tested for that. Since synthroid regulates the gland that regulates your metabolism, and you're now showing problems metabolizing sugar, you may need to get your insulin levels checked.

Another possibility is that you've developed a caffeine allergy. Most sodas are caffeinated so try drinking a non caffeinated, carbonated beverage and see if you still suffer. If you're fine, it's not the carbonation, but the caffeine that's your nemesis.

If your insulin levels are fine, and you get a test to see if your allergic to caffeine and it comes back negative, then you may just have to give up sodas which wouldn't be an alltogether terrible thing since they're pretty much terrible for you. Regular and diet.

I've been on Synthroid (8 yrs) and then on Armour Thyroid for 10 years.
They never affected what I could eat/drink.
Are you taking any arthritis medication?
I've heard some of those may affect your stomach.

I see an internist for my thyroid tests and medication.
Some people see endocrinologists and others will see general practitioners or internists.
Who ever you see, it should be someone who will listen to you and work with you.
Someone who just goes by the numbers of your TSH test and does not measure free T3 and T4 is not looking at all they should.
Synthroid did not relieve all my symptoms.
It turned out I am someone who does not convert T4 to T3 very well, so Armour Thyroid works better for me but many people do very well on Synthroid.

I've been on Synthroid for almost 2 years, and haven't had any side effects at all. That sounds odd, could it be something else? On the plus side, most carbonated beverages are bad for you anyways, at least now you have some incentive to stop drinking them. If it really bothers you, call the nurse at your doctor's office. They'll be able to tell you if it's normal or not.

I took Synthroid for several years and have been on the generic (Levothyroxine) for about 4 years now and I have never experienced any side effects with either. I have heard that some people have adverse reactions to the generic and can only take the real drug, Synthroid. I realize that doesn't apply to you now, it's just something I brought up because I had never heard of that and found it interesting and something to keep in mind.

I have never seen an endocrinologist. My family practice physician has always treated my hypothyroidism. A few years ago I had a partial thyroidectomy due to a growth on one side of the gland, and that was performed by an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor. Once I healed up from that, he released me back into the care of my family practice doctor. Even during my two pregnancies, my family practice doctor still monitored my thyroid.

Good luck to you!

I've been on synthroid (or levoxyl) for about 12 years. I have stopped drinking diet soda, but still drink other carbonated beverages. I've never had a problem. I suspect it's not connected.

My husband has been on Synthroid for years. The Doctor suggested we not go generic as it is different. We have not had any problems but you also need to know a few things. You must take you medication in the morning and at least 1/2 hour before you eat. Also you can not eat raw broccoli. Cooked broccoli is ok. The em-zines in raw broccoli affect your medication. Making sure your multivitamin has 200mg of selenium. You can also get selenium from Brazil nuts (4). My husband has never gone to an endocrinologist. He has his blood tested at least once a year by our general doctor. He use to go every 3 months till they got is stabilized. You need to make sure you take it everyday. If he forgets for a couple of days he becomes so tired and irritable.

I have been on Synthroid. I am one of the "lucky ones" who cannot take the generic drug. Oh yay!! :( I have never had any issues regarding food or drink with my medication. I have never heard of they type of reaction. I am treated by an endocinologist
