Time for a New Vehicle for Fam of 5.. What Should I Get?

I am having some problems with my dodge van and after i hear back from the mechanic tomorrow it might be time to start shopping for a new vehicle. I have 125, 000 miles on it and I am getting nickeled and dimed to death. The same thing happened 2 yrs ago with out Ford Escape, we replaced it with a scion xb.

I have three kids (3, 6,9) so I thought I wanted a suv/van/wagon because it would be nice to have room for an extra kid here and there. With Gas continuing to rise I want a vehicle that gets good gas mileage. I would like something that seat 6,but I am flexible. My husband thinks I really need to get something with great gas mileage and maybe even a hybrid.

I have been thinking of getting away from American after our last couple of vehicles barely got 125,000 miles (dodge and ford). I am somewhat looking at the Hyundai, Subaru or Kia but I am open to any and all suggestions. We like to drive our cars for a long time and would like something that can get some bang for our buck. I also have to be a little cost conscience. What should i get?

Have you SEEN the Ford Fusions? And the New Explorers? Really nice.

When we get a new vehicle, we get the most for the $$ we have to spend and pay cash. THAT's getting the most bang for the buck--and never a brand new vehicle.

Nissan vans last forever. The seats can survive ice cream drippings and dirty feet and still hold together. The Nissan does not cost much to maintain as it has minimal breakdowns.

We gave up on Dodge after our minivan needed new transmission at 49K miles and moved to Toyota Sienna. It has 164K miles on it and engine is still good. Brakes and tires need changing on a regular basis but we take them to Naper Auto Works and Discount Tire. The car dealership presses too hard to try to move you to a newer model car while the people who just focus on maintenance work have helped us more. Our household tends to keep our cars a very long time.

I have a GMC van that just turned over 200,000. My hubby's Sierra was almost 250,000 before it finally gave out. The gas mileage isn't too good on the larger Chevies though.
My hubby had a Honda that lasted until 240,000 and my dad had a Toyota that went to about 180,000.

We now have a Prius. I love it. Hubby thinks it is too practical. It gets routinely 50-52 mpg. THe kids think they are squished but I have ridden in the back and there is plenty of room. Mine are 10, 13, and 16. THere is ample back space too.
