when your tonsils are swollen you can feel them on the outside of the throat, just where your head and neck meet. they're just big sore lumps and the inside of the throat will be really really really red.
Ok so my husband has a throat infection with little white spots on his throat. He went to the doctor and they said that it wasn't strep it was an infection that is contagious. My consern is my2 yr old. Although he doesn't have white spots, my husband says his tonsils look swollen. I can't remember what they are supposed to look like since it has been forever since I actually seen tonsils. So my question is, are tonsils supposed to be visible? When do you know they are swollen? And when should I be concerned enough to take him to the doctor?
Thanks everyone for your advice. My husband got put on antibiotics. I didnt think my husband had tonsils, but the white spots were puss pockets on his tonsils!!! My son was not affected by it and is doing fine. Our doctor said that my husband had a vefry contagious throat infection. That was it. No nasme for it, just infected which is what bothered me. I guess he had tonsilitis. Anyway everyone is doing fine and my husband although he is still sleeping in the office due to snoring is getting better. Thank to you all!!

E., What exactly is your husband's diagnosis? How is the physician treating him? Is it viral or bacterial? I always keep distance between sick family members, and have learned natural remedies to boost immune systems. My girls share a bedroom, and with an arsenol of technics we rarely pass anything around the family. I have a mom-owned business in this area that addresses these health issues. Look me up under Shaklee Independent Distributor in the Business Review Section of Mamasource. A.
My 16 month old just had what seems like the same infection. He acted fine and I noticed some spots on his tongue. Fearing Strep, I brought him to the doctor and his throat was coated with the blisters you described. The doctor made me look because he could not believe how well he was acting to be so sick. My 3 1/2 year old got the infection but not as severe. The doctor told me that he was EXTREMELY contagious and to keep him isolated for 2 weeks. I think I would check with your pediatrician just to be on the safe side.
Hi E.,
My son's tonsils are very large, They almost touch. His Dr has told me they are fine. Tonsils sizes vary some are small some are very very large. I would just see the Dr. If your son complains of sore throat or you see similar symptoms of your husband. I have been told size is only a problem if snoring occurs. Good luck and hope this is somewhat helpful.
E.,
Tonsils are part of the immune system. They are basically the first line of defense before ingestion. It is normal to see tonsils. My sister had unusually large tonsils. It was amazing she was even able to breathe, especially if she had tonsillitis. If they are not red, no spots, pain, air way is open (tonsils don't touch together), I think you can wait until the next ped appt and ask the Dr. If any of these signs occur then I would get him checked out sooner.
In my husband's family on the male side of the family, they have problems with chronic infections as they get older. My husband has his tonsils out at the age of 33, his father & grandfather, at similar ages.
I dont think you need to be so drastic as taking your child to an ENT at this point, a simple trip to the pedi would be enough. But yes tonsils can be visible....my 4 year old had large tonsils... so just because you can see them doesnt mean they are infected. If the are bright red-a different red from the rest of his mouth then you would want him to be seen....but if your son is symptom free leave it alone....until he gets symptoms/IF he gets them
If your really concerned take him to the doctor now. Better to be safe then sorry. You should be washing all your dishes with bleach while your husband has this infection.
