Trick or Treating Is Ilegal for Children over 12 in Virginia!!

Am I the ONLY person who thinks this is wrong? If convicted, the child caught trick or treating would be charged with a level three misdemeanor. Kind of harsh, don't you think?

What can I do next?

I think Trick or Treating should be open to everyone who wants to join in with good intentions. In my neighborhood you get a treat no matter what your age is as long as you are dressed in costume and are polite. We have no problem turning kids away who are not in costume and believe me this happens way too often. We also have treats for the parents if they would like to participate. And what's up with the parents who follow their children in their cars?! Get off your lazy butts and enjoy the evening with your children! As for prosecuting kids for trick or treating over age, give me a break. Don't we have more important things to worry about?

Also in VA, and we could not believe it either. My eldest began Trick or Treating for UNICEF after she was 13 with her younger sister. We still all go out together as a family, and she generally is offered treats when she goes to the door without asking and still gets to dress up. After a few years people look for her and have money ready as well as a special treat for her.

Parents also hold neighborhood block parties to get around the Trick or Treating law. Everybody brings candy and a dish to pass. As trick or treaters come up, they can join the party or grab a handful of candy and keep going. I think it is a general law that allows the police to enforce if needed, to keep some situations from getting out of hand.

To me, in my opinion, 12 year old are still children. Why do some people think older children "steal" little kids bags? Because they don't have anything to do and are still wanting to have the fun. I feel as long as they are kids...let them be kids....and if the person handing out the candy feels the child is too old, then that should be up to that person if she wanted to give candy out or not. But to give them a misdemeanor, that is way over the law to do...

they think of it as stealing from the little kids. so once you turn 13 you either stay home walk with the adults or have some fun. some kids i know dress up and put on a show for the trick or treaters. i think last year a girl ran around screaming and soon after a beast of some sort would appear running after her. you cant trick or treat forever so they chose 12 as the year to stop.

I have been on both sides of this fence. My son trick or treated for several years after the he passed the age limit. He is now 18 and has not gone for a few years! HOWEVER...every year I have huge children show up with little or no costumes and stick a bag in my face...without even muttering trick or treat. and I think THAT is why there is a law in place. it's for the little kids. perhaps for children 13 and up have a nice gathering at your house! or go hunting for some of those awesome haunted trains/forests/houses?
happy halloween!

I think I've heard something about this before. That's why I always liked going to the parade at Leesburg. Everyone is there in costume, all the floats throw candy, and everyone has a good time with no door to door risks. The police and fire departments are right in the parade! I wish more towns did this. Where we are now, it's like a lot of people equate Halloween with devil worship or something so they throw Fall or Harvest Festivals instead. It's ok but just not as fun.
