Tubal Ligation - Chicago, IL

Hi,
I had it done about 15 years ago and had no problems. It was done on Friday and I was back to work on Monday. There's some cramping and I wore loose clothing for about a week, but overall everything went fine.

I had a tubal done after my last child, who is now going to be 7 years old. I had no complications. Healing is a little painful. The only reason I had it done instead of my husband is because I was having a c-section. I think that if your not having a c-secion then perhaps your partner should look into having it done. It is cheaper and healing time is much better. Talk to your husband about it, and see what happens.

I'm considering this also. I have to ask you what everyone asks me when I tell them I want to do it...what about your partner? Even when I mentioned it to my OB/Gyn, HE said, "You know it's an easier procedure for your husband to have it done?"

That being said, Rich and I talked it over and after this baby is born I plan on being wheeled right in the next room to get tied up. IF for some reason, it's can't be done, then Rich will get it done.

Ok, my mom had it done like 15 years ago and she said there was a little discomfort but no issues what-so-ever.

You know what? After reading the other responses, I'm starting to think I'm going to look into other options. One of them being Rich getting it done.

It looks like I'm going to be induced on Monday. If for some reason I have to have a c-section, I'm going to request a tubal. However, my plan is to have the Essure procedure done after the baby is born. It it permanent and done in your dr's office.
I'd check it out. It's done vaginally, so no scars!

My husband just had hernia surgery (different, I know), but he was also put to sleep and had the tube inserted in his throat to help him breathe. He tolderated the anesthesia just fine, but did have a sore throat for a couple of days from the tube. Other than that, his surgery experience was easy and well-tolerated.

DO NOT do it!! Let your husband get fixed. There are more problems after having this done. Cramps that hurt so bad,heavier bleeding,and if they mess up you could end up having other sugeries. There are so many other methods that you don't have to mess with and having your husband get it done is faster and easier.

I had my tubal ligation in October 2002 without any complications. I had never been under anesthesia before and that was my concern also. But I kid you not, my anestesiologist told me to count backwards from 100 and the last number I remember saying was 98. Afterwards there was some discomfort which is to be expected but my overall experience wasn't bad considering it was surgery. As a matter of fact I was back to work withing 3 days. Although I wouldn't advise doing what I did, because everyone is different and we all heal differently so don't rush into doing any heavy lifting or anything. Basically follow your physician's list of what to and not do.

I don't have any experience, but was also considering it.
I can say a couple of things here in response to the other posts.
One is that we are currently hearing and reading more and more info on how vasectomy leads to Alzheimers in males. I would be aware of that new information before I put hubby under the knife, so to speak.

Also, what about an IUD? It's something else I was thinking about and is less invasive from what I understand, than a tubal.

I would research the net- both pros and cons, blogs, etc. and get a couple of actual dr's (or maybe a Certified Nurse Midwife) to explain and get their opinions before I made a final choice!

I had it done in February 2004, the day after I had my second son. They gave me an epidural, and made the incision on my belly button. No tube down my throat. It was fine. I was in some pain. Nothing too terrible, but definitely allow yourself some recovery time. I tried to do too much too fast and learned my lesson. It has changed my cycles drastically and I PMS like never before! But I have no regrets!

Someone already mentioned essure. I had it done last year and have had no complications. It is not major surgery, does not require anesthesia, and is covered by insurance (at least BCBSIL covered it, as long as it's billed as sterilization). There is no recovery time and minimal pain. Permanent birth control, but you do have to use additional bc during the first 3 months until you have a dye test done to insure you're protected.
