Tubes in Ears for 6 Y/o

My daughter will be getting tubes in her ears and will have her adnoids out in 2 weeks. I know this is a common procedure for younger kids, but I was wondering if anyone had experience with older kids having the procedure? She has to stay home from school for 2 days, but what was the "true" recovery time? Any tips on preparing her for what will happen?

Thanks in advance!

My son had his adenoids out and tubes in when he was 6, and he had a rare side-effect (extremely severe headaches for almost a week), so his recovery was about a week long. I really think the problem was extended because they put him on vicodin for his headaches - they were awful - and I think he was getting rebound headaches from the medication. He was fine once we got him off of the vicodin and the headaches went away.

He will have had the tubes for two years in June, and they haven't fallen out yet. I'm wondering if we'll have to have them removed. I'll be asking the doctor about it soon.

I hope all goes well for your daughter. :)

My dd had exactly the same done at 6yrs old too. Best thing we ever did. She did great in surgery, kind of grumpy and sore for the first couple of days then totally back to normal. Lots of hugs, lying on the couch reading or watching tv and napping. Oh and for swimming we had to wait 6 weeks and after that we used ear bandits for about a year.

My son had it done at age 3, but at that age he was miserable for 2 days and fully recovered and back at school at 5 days. I don't know if it will be better or worse for a 6 yo. I would say that for post recovery you should ask your doctor what he recommends for swimming. Some docs want the kids to put ear plugs in for as long as the tubes are in. For others, they say not to bother. The problem we had is that the ear plugs would fall out and my son would shove them back in. two months after the surgery he ended up with a nasty ear infection and the tubes were suctioned out.

My son has not had his adenoids out, but he had tubes put in when he was 15 months, again at 6 yr, and again at 8 yr. Recovery time on that is almost instant. The last one he got was only in his left ear, and it was a more permanent type tube.

My daughter had 2 sets of tube with the second being at your daughters age. Adnoids out with the first. It is relatively painless and 2 days sounds right. Hardest part is coming out of anesthesia. Get her to drink lots in the days before and then after the surgery. It will help. Good luck.
