My 21 month old daughter has had a strew of ear infections. This time they wont go away. She has had fluid and ear infections in both ears for almost 5 weeks now. We've been on 4 different antibiotics, including the shots. Doctor is sending us to an ENT to discuss tubes. We go on Thursday.
I've been reading up on what they do, and I'm scared, and nervous about this whole thing.
Her body isnt even fighting the infection anymore (no fever).
Any advice on tubes? Go for it? Dont do it? How did you handle the surgery?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

She did get tubes last week and is doing wonderfully. Very skittish but talking up a storm.
Thank you so much for all your help! I was still a mess, but it helped my decision to know others have done this too.

I never heard of taking them off dairy and seeing a chiropractor. But it's worth a try.

Mine didnt' get tubes until he was almost 5. He now has a hearing deficit in both ears, not technically a loss because in the dr's office he hears all the sounds on their tests, but he does not have certain words or human voice sounds because he couldn't hear for so long when he was so little.
Take her to the ENT. Have her evaluated.
Since tubes, mine has had one ear infection, he is 10.

Try taking her off dairy and to a chiropractor first! I've seen at least ten kids get better after a month or so, and only one who still needed tubes due to the shape of his inner ear.

We had the same thing only my DD was 10 mos old and had a fever the ENTIRE FLIPPIN TIME! 30 days of a fever in 45 days - 5 antibiotics, Rocephin shots, etc. We got the tubes put in while there was an active infection. She was like a new child that same afternoon. Do the tubes! Make sure the ENT doing the surgery routinely deals with kids the age of your daughter -- ours specialized in the 6 mo-4 year old crowd in his practice and had been doing the surgery forever (he was a grandpa). Best to do it before your daughter faces hearing loss!

Best wishes!

Put the tubes in! Both of my kids went through this. My daughter was 14 months old when she had hers put in. However, have them look at the adnoids as well. My kids could get better but then would get ear infections again and it was because of the adnoids . It would not have matter how much antibiotic we were on. With our daughter we did a small dose of medicinie for six months. Two weeks after she completed that, she had an ear infection. A bad one. I didn't mess around with kiddo number 2. He was 4 months when he got his first set and a little over 2 when he got the second set and adnoids out. They haven't had any issues since and they are now 22 years old and 18 years old. I will also say, that my daughter had a pronouced hearing loss prior to the surgery and now has no hearing loss at all. Good luck!

TUBES TUBES TUBES TUBES : ). Both my kids have/had them. My first after 11 infections in a year - and she is much happier and I believe healthier b/c she doens't have constant pain, infection and antibiotics. It's such a simple and easy procedure... go for it if you have the option. Good luck, I know it's tough to see them so miserable!

I say go for it. My son had tons of ear infections, so painful!
We had the tubes put in over a year ago and he hasn't had one since. Its been a real blessing.
I was scared too, but its a very common surgery and really does help.

If you constant had ear infections wouldn't you want to feel better? My son had tubes put in at 11 months. He wasn't walking or even creeping along the couch he was a crawling machine though. 2 weeks after the tubes he just took off walking. All the fluid and infections were messing with his equilibrium so bad he couldnt keep his balance enough to walk. It is always scary to see your little guy go through any surgical procedure but its one that is well worth it.

It was the best thing we did for our son. No regrets, other than not doing it sooner!

Take her to the ENT and see what they say. Also try the chiropractor. Does she have any sysmptoms of reflux?
My DS had one after the other and they were talking tubes but we figured out that his severe GERD was causing the ear infections when the liquids came up and into his ear canals. We controlled the GERD and took him to the chiropractor (pediatric one who specializes in alignment of the tubes) and he has not had a single infection since....over a year now!

Go for it!! It will make the world of a difference. My son just had his second set of tubes and had his adenoids out and it was a breeze for him. No pain meds or anything. He was up and bouncing around before we even left the hospital. He was the same way after the first set of tubes. There was a huge difference with his hearing after the first set. He couldn't have the windows down in the car or the fan on in the bathroom on at first because it was so loud for him. It took a little while for him to adjust to the new sounds but then he was good to go. His ears were fine until one of the first tubes fell out and that is why we had to have the second in.

Tubes are miracle workers!!! I cannot stress how fantastic they are...but I will try. :) My 15 month old daughter had an ear infection that wouldn't go away. Constant fevers for 2 months. And I mean, every other day there was a fever. No antibiotic would take care of it. It was horrible. I would cry, my daughter would cry. I never saw light at the end of the tunnel. Finally, our doctor said (after hesitation since they don't like to rush into tubes) said that we HAD to get to the ENT. We were squeezed in...Dr. Baroody who has an office in Indiana but does the procedure at the University of Chicago Komer Children's hospital. We needed to get tubes right away.

I was nervous as heck...I am with anything...and this was the most scary thing to me in my life. My child going under anesthesia. Ok......this hospital and doctors and nurses was so fantastic. I've never seen anything like it. It is a well oiled machine. The procedure took all of 10 minutes (total under was only 3) and that was it! Waking up from the anesthesia was the hardest part. After 45 minutes of crying it was like we had a new child. I recommened you get the tubes because it is life changing! Literally! We went from being sick and crying all the time...to happiness, no fevers, no pain!!!!

I freaked out when we walked into the ent's office and he started pulling out surgery forms too. But my son already had a temporary hearing loss from the infections. That freaked me out more so we had them place. The best thing ever. He could hear right away after and no more infections. Because he was older (4) they placed the permanent tubes and we had to have them removed later but both surgeries were very quick and he recovered very quickly. Good luck

Despite all my worry and hesitations we went with tubes when my son was 8 1/2 months. I consulted with more than one ENT before making my decision. I also made it a point to find out who the anesthesiologist would be and spoke to him prior to the procedure. The procedure was over within a few minutes...in fact, the Dr. was back out before I had to start telling myself to calm down. Unfortunately, within 5 weeks he had another ear infection. I was shocked to see the amount of fluid that came out of his ears. To think all that fluid is trapped in there with ongoing infections for months is awful. I was told that it takes three months for the ears to clear after an infection. If they are constatnly getting infections, the ears just never clear. I was precribed drops for his post-tube infection and they cleared up within 4 days. My little guy has been suffering from a stuffy nose and ear infections for 6 months, with no fevers. I am now going to try taking him off dairy and having him checked for allergies. I will not take him to a chiropractor for my own personal reasons. I am not convinced with the evidence availalble on this issue compared to the risks. I suggest you consult with more than one in ENT with respect to the tubes, and reasearch whether the chiropractic approach is right for you and your little one. Best of luck.

Both my kids had tubes my son at about 7 months my daughter just before she turned 2. Best thing we ever did for them.

I understand your concern I was the same way but talk with the ENT about it, pros and cons put your mind at ease. Because I was so over protective about my kids I insisted on going to Childrens

The tubes are a breeze and usually work wonderfully. The anesthesia is really the bigger concern. Make sure you have a gentle, kind, pediatric anesthesiologist.

both of my kids had tubes and I say definately go for it. my reasoning being my oldest got his tubes and his speech went up like 150 words in a week. a huge diffrence nowmy youngest had tubes no diffrence in his speech he is 2 1/2 and about 30 words of which about 20 are understandable. the rest are his vocabulary that you couldnt understand. now one of his tubes has fallen out and I will have it put back in but I am also doing the chiropractor. cant hurt to do both. I am very for tubes cause of the change it made in my oldest. now my youngest is hard of hearing tubes may or may not fix this. I dont know if it is cause the one has fallen out or other wise. so I am going to redo the tube to give him the best chance possible.

I fought and fought the tubes and then after 7 infections in 6 months and non-stop anitbiotics I caved. BEST THING WE EVER DID!!! Surgery was so quick--I think it was over in 10 minutes. This was last July and he hasn't had an infection since. Go for it...really, don't hesitate. I wish we had done it sooner!
