1. I'm 31 and i exercise regularly, mostly long walks and bicycle rides. recently my knees have been killing me, literally. I had to climb a ladder at work the other day and was literally pulling myself up by my arms to take some stress off my knees. My dad told me to try glucosomine, but it turns out there are shellfish ingredients in it and i am allergic to shellfish. other suggestions?

2. TMI ALERT: since i had my youngest 4 years ago my period has been horrible. very heavy, so cranky, cramps etc. i had to get up 4 freakin' times to use the restroom last night and am now beat. I've talked to my doc at every annual and he ran me through tests and what not and found nothing wrong. so, are there any foods or anything you've found useful to help you girls out?

What can I do next?

I can't help you with the second question, but the answer to the first one is simple: it's doctor time! If your knees are truly killing you, you need to consult with a pro - ASAP, I should think.. You may be sent to an orthopedist. My understanding is that glucosomine is more for preventative purposes than restoration purposes.

My knees aren't good either and I'm not overweight. However, when I ski or do other higher impact sports, I use knee supports - the elastic black bands...this helps keep my knees from hurting.

As far as the periods, it sound like you might have just a little uterine prolapse. This is where the uterus drops and puts pressure on the bladder. There is something called a "uterine lift" which is part of pelvic massage. You actually lift the uterus by cupping your hands on your lower pelvis and lifting up and holding it for 30 seconds. You might also try the "legs up the wall" yoga pose. This uses gravity to get the uterus back up into position. You can probably find tutorials on youtube

Talk to an orthopedic surgeon who specializes on knees. The thing is you need to know what is wrong with your knees. Glucosomine only works with cartilage damage it does little or nothing if the issue is arthritis.

My birth control pills regulate that nicely.

My friend's husband had to stop riding because of the pain in his knees. He had knee surgery over a year ago and things were good for a while. Before he went back to the doctor he went to the cycle shop and they adjusted his bike (seat, handlebars, etc). That seemed to be his problem with his bike adjusted by a professional, he is able to ride with no knee pain again.

As for question 2, I would get a second opinion. Are you on BC? You might consider some form to help decrease the severity of it. You might have to as part of the process of the doc figuring it out. (depending on your insurance)

I get arthritis pain in my knees occasionally and have since childhood. When it flares up, I take an anti-inflammatory until it calms down. Usually 4 ibuprofen every 6 hours until the pain stops. Doesn't take long.

For the period, I've had that same trouble as well, especially very heavy bleeding. It's a nightmare. At the advice of my OB's nurse, when it happens, I take ibuprofen, and for some reason, the bleeding slows down. I don't know the science behind it, but it works. Make midol your friend during your period. Also, see another gyno. Very heavy and very painful periods are NOT normal.
