If you can't see anything wrong with that area, it could be anything, try looking at his behavior. My son(3 in a few weeks) scratches and rubs his face when tired/sleeping and always has. I always know when his nails need trimmed, because he really scratches. Suprisingly, a lot of kids do ear stuff(pulling, scratching, sticking hair in the ear) when sleepy. I still stick my hair in my ears when I'm sleepy and have been told that I've done this since the age when my hair first grew long enough to put it in there! Seriously, it feels really good! I have 2 friends with little girls that do the same-see if he's only doing it before napping/sleeping. If not, or it becomes excessive, call the Dr.

Without much information, it could be any number of things...dry skin, ear infection, lice, just an itch, bug bite.

It could be an ear ache or infection if this behavior is new. But, if he's always done it, it could just be a habit of some kind. My son always pulled and scratched his ear when he was tired (instead of rubbing his eyes). It took me awhile to figure it out, but he only did it when he was tired.

Just behind the ears and at the nape of the neck are favorite homes for lice. It is easy to miss the actual creatures when looking at the hair, but much easier to look for nits. Here's a link that describes what to look for.

That may not be the problem at all, but it would be best to check and be certain.

It could be alot of things but you should check for lice!! If it is lice, you should check with your pediatrician about treatment, I wouldn't think you could use the same treatment that you do for the big kids!!

Good luck!

I would check for lice...my girls just had it for the 1st tine! UGH...it was the worst. Lice love behind the ears and at the base of the hairline in the back of their head. If he is pulling at his ears...probably more toward an ear infection. Good Luck!

My granddaughter had a fungus behind her ear that was barely noticeable. Maybe your son has this as well. Took a trip to the doctor and a medication and it was fine.

That is one of the favorite hiding spots for lice. So I would have a pedi check for lice. It could also be an ear infection coming on, so again I would have a pedi check it out. I hope for both of you that it's something simple!
