It depends on the child but I would say the average is 5. My daughter learned at 3 but she was very stubborn and independent. My other daughter learned at 4 and I taught my step son at 5.
Hey Mamas. Just curious as to what age your child began to tie his/her own shoelaces. My daughter will be four in June and we've been trying to teach her to tie shoelaces and she can do the knot part but can't seem to grasp the loop part. Also, how long did it take for your child to learn to tie shoelaces?
Thank you Moms!
Thanks Mamas! I just wanted to make sure we were on track! We have this doggie that has has a shoe with laces so we've been practicing with that. The book sounds like a great idea! I think we will try that too. Thanks again Mamas!

My son will be 5 in July and still doesn't get it. I think it depends on the determination of the kid. Mine, just seems to give up. I don't think many kids his age know how. I would be really impressed if your daughter would get it at 3..that is some good fine motor control.
Tying your shoes requires good fine motor skills which boys can develop later than girls. It's a goal for the kindergarten kids to be able to do this, but my kids didn't get it until later, like late 1st grade. I didn't help, I'm sure, because I got the velcro shoes.
I did get a book which had laces in it to help. I think it was called Tie a Bow Ben Bunny or something like that. I took about a week for them to get it once I really pushed. I just had them work on each day for awhile.
I was kind of a rebel at school on this topic as I don't see any urgent need for them to do this. Yes, they need to learn it, but it's not going to keep them from doing something else if it takes them longer to get it. My 3 older kids can do it fine now, they are good students and good in other stuff. Not being able to tie their shoes in kindergarten hasn't held them back.
Oops, sorry if I went off on a tangent.

I don't have experience with my own kids yet, but I remember learning to tie my own shoes in kindergarten. I was at least 5 1/2.
Hi A.,
My son was 4 1/2 when he learned (it was last summer and he turned 5 in November).
I will tell you though, he is one of the only kids in his pre-school class that CAN tie shoes.
My husband taught him. I (surprisingly!) did not have the patience to teach him. I just could not get the communication down so he could get it. My husband was much better at that (also surprisingly!) :-)
My mom has a book that has a shoe on the cover with laces. Its a good book.
Good Luck and don't stress over it!

My son just turned 5 when I taught him...it was a rainy weekend and we didn't go out at all so I just randomly would make him try throughout the weekend. He learned that weekend and I am persistant on having him do it over and over, instead of slipping on his shoes. (my cousin's son knew how to tie his shoe laces...but forgot because he would always slip his shoes on) Most children in Kindergarten don't know how to tie their shoes, so you have some time until I would think she needs to be able to do it...it doesn't hurt to start now though!!!
Mu older daughter was probably 6, and my twins are in 1st grade, and working on it now. No hurry, they will get it.
Hi A.:
Have you tried the "bunny ear" method to tie the shoes? If you haven't here are two links: the first link has visuals and the second has a description/ story to tell your daughter.

I have taught several children to tie shoes using this method. I hope this helps.
Good luck.
