When my brother was born he had 2 knots in his cord... he's 26 now. But do follow it b/c it is serious.
I am 24 weeks pregnant with my 5th child. Today I had an ultrasound. The dr. said my baby girl is healthy so far, but he then told me there is a knot in the umbilical cord. He said it happens in 1% of pregnancies, and to make sure I track her movements. Now im worried. I have to go back in 8 weeks to have an another echocardiogram done on her heart (my firstborn was born with a heart defect). He said he will check on the cord again that day. I've never heard of this. I've had 4 healthy preganancies. Has anyone had any experience with this? Should I be worried?

OMG! I had this with my daughter! The Dr. said " this is only the 2nd time I have ever seen this" The knot wasn't detected in an ultra sound though. Even though I was going once a week for one. They discovered this after she was delivered. The umbilical cord was also loose from the placenta. She was born healthy.I have no idea why this wasn't caught in all of those ultra sounds I had. But she was born healthy.
I've never heard of something like this, I'm sorry.
Call the dr's office and ask to speak with someone who can explain what you are to expect now that you have been made aware of the situation. Maybe they can put your mind at ease.
I've also learned from experience about the power of prayer. So, I will be praying for you to be comforted and that you will know that God cares about you and the precious little life growing inside your womb.
God Bless you and your family.

My son, now four and was baby number four for me, had a knot in his umbilical cord. My situation was a little different because they didn't discover it until I was in labor and his heart rate was dropping during contractions. Obviously this was cause for concern and had my husband extremely worried but I did end up delivering naturally (well, not a c-section). He spent some time in triage where he was monitored carefully before moving to the nursery but there were no issues. Today he is happy and healthy. I think knowing about it early is a good thing, except for the worrying part. But at least the docs know about it and know what signs to be looking for in case problems develop. Good luck, I'm sure everything will be fine.
My cousin had a baby born with a knot in his umbilical cord. They didn't discover it until he was born. If you didn't have to have the ECHO would this have ever been noticed? I am sorry that you have 16 more weeks to worry about it. I know that I would be that same way.Just take one day at a time and I am pray for a healthy baby girl. My guess is this may be more common then you think? God bless.
I used to examine placentas/cords as a job and i will say it is more common than you would think. It is a serious condition, however, live healthy babies are the usual result. Your OB will monitor and if anything becomes more than 'watchful waiting,' then he/she will act accordingly. It would be sad if you let this consume your mind for the remainder of your pregnancy - there is nothing you can do to reverse this, and nothing you can do to to maximize the outcome of the pregnancy with regards to the knot. Just take a deep breath and know that those amazing little suckers are quite resilient and keep counting those movements!
best,

Hi L.,
Did you see the Ultrasound?
Did the Doctor show you a diagram of what he was talking about?
If not, then you make an appointment to go into his office and have him explain and show you what he was talking about.
If you are afraid to do that, have your husband do it with you.
Good luck. D.
My daughter was born with what the Drs. called a true knot. You really need to keep track of her movements. If they decrease or stop please call your dr. I did not know about my daughters knot until I delivered. I was induced 3 days early because I started to have complications. She was perfectly healthy. I did have one day during the late part of the pregency where I thought she had decreased movements and went to the Drs. They hooked me up to a moniter and she was moving I just couln't feel it.
I will say a proyer for you and you new baby girl. Congratulations and best wishes. Try to enjoy this time even though you are worried.
I would see if you could have a specialist give you one of those 4d u/s. This is serious however and shouldn't be treated lightly. There is a possibility that you could have to have a c/s because of the dangers. The main thing to is to track the movements because you want to make sure that the knot has tightened.
L.,
I know that this is stressful, but I actually thought that this was FAAAAAAAAAR more common than 1%. (I'm studying childbirth education and am extremely involved in the childbirth communittee).
The umbilical cord is alagolous to a phone cord--even if you tie a knot in it, it's still gonna work perfectly fine 99.9% of the time. It was DESIGNED to get knotted. That's why it's so twisty & spirally.
I really wouldn't worry about it. I mean really--what's that going to DO? Talk to your baby & reassure him/her and just relax so that your placenta gets the oxygen that it's meant to.
Hang in there! You'll both be fine!
