Just notice today that my 5 months old umbilical site is red and she is running fever of 100.1 rectally but the temp. could be because she is cutting teeth. Any suggestions or should i call the doctor about it. Help!
Is there any drainage or foul odor coming from her umbilical area?? Also touch the area and see if it feels hotter than the rest of her tummy. If not you shouldn't worry... I know easier said than done :) But to give you some peace of mind you can always call her Pediatricians office and talk with the RN on duty.
I would call the Dr to be on the safe side even though it totally could be her teeth.

Go get her checked by her doctor. My nephew, and a cousin both had the same problem, and it ended up being that they had a hernia in that area. My cousin's was worse because they kept trying to treat it over the counter thinking it was something small, due to it going untreated for so long, he ended up having to have a surgery. My nephew's was red with a fever a few times, then he started bleeding, my sister rushed him to the hospital and the doctor's were able to tell them how to treat it which ended up preventing his case from becoming so serious.
I know that alot of mothers swear that cutting teeth causes a fever but according to my child doctor that is NOT the case.He said it might cause the cheeks to be red,pain,discomfort.But that a fever is from a virus.I say take your child to the doctor.If you call they will just tell you to bring her in anyway.
If it is a hernia, it will be tender to touch; she may likely be fussy, and she may run a fever. coming from experience, it happens quickly, sometimes resolving on it's own. we had to have the surgery, however. they were unable to reduce it physically. my son had a hernia originally which was soft and easily reducible. one day it became hard and red, he started vomiting, and was very irritable and wouldn't let you touch it. just FYI. hope this helps. and....babies can get a fever when teething no matter what doctors say, because mine did!! mother of 4 and a pediatric nurse practitioner.
My third child had the umbilical cord site red, and kind of puffy at about 4 months old and it was an infection. It was letting off some fluid and he had a little bit of a fever I took him to his doctor and it was infected we received some cream to put on it. The site cleared up in a few days. I also had noticed when my children would cut their teeth that they had a bit of a runny nose and a little bit of a fever just enough to be feeling bad. It could be either I'd call and get an appt or seek assistance at an urgent care and see what they think. With the umbilical cord area being red I'd be more tempted to think it's that. Hope everything works out and your little one is feeling better soon without a fever.

A rectal temp of 100.1 is equal to an oral temp of 99.1--not at all considered a fever. It is most likey due to teething. As for the umbilical site, I would look for any oozing and/or discharge. Does it seem to bother her when you touch it? Does it seem warmer to the touch more so than the rest of her skin? Have you noticed any unpleasant odor? If your answer is no to these questions, it is most likely not a problem. You can try swabbing it with alcohol but she old enough that it is most likely a huge concern. If you still feel uneasy, call your pediatrician's office and explain the situation to the nurse.
I would definitely call the doctor. Most doctors will tell you that babies don't run a temp with teething. (old wives tale) My daughter never ran a temp unless she was sick.
When my kids cut a tooth they did run a small temp and I gave them .4 infant tylenol, but that was at age 8m not 5m. I dont believe the umbilical site has anything to do with her temp. You know your daughter and how she should act. Call your dr. They may tell you to give some medician. When you do call you will need her birthdate and approxmite weight. Good luck to you both.
Call the doctor. Contrary to most wives tales, most kids don't get a fever when cutting teeth. If she has a fever under 6 months old, my pediatrician always said to call and see about bringing the child in, even if it to rule out something worse. If you add in the red belly button area, I would definitely take her in to see what is going on.
