Hello All!

We've recently moved into a 2 story home and I'm concerned about my preschooler. Does anyone know of any device or latch that will keep my child from openning a window? Even with screens, I'm still concerned.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for the great suggestions. I did a search online and found window wedges on parentcenter.com. They look great, they're wedge that you velco on so that in an emergency an older child or adult can remove them quickly.

Thanks again - I'll report back on how they work.

Hi K. b iam J. and you are my 1st.yes, it would concern me too,can the child have a room downstairs or near your room for a while?let the child know that windows are not things to play with they can break and someone can get hurt and that will make you sad if someone gets hurt, tell the child the truth.i have 3 gransons and the boys were playing in the room well one of the boys threw something and what did it do it broke the glass so we now have the plexy-glass on the windows.and remind the boys not to throw things in the house...runing and throwing is outside play.....J.

There are these little brackets that you can attach to the windows that have a screw on them. You can set them at your preferred height. They will only allow the window to be opened as high as you set them. I'm not sure if Walmart carries them but I'm sure Schofield's Ace Hardware has them...That place rocks!

They do sell things called window guards, that will allow you to open the window 2 inches or so and no more, and you can lock them so your children connot access the locks. I'm sure you can get them anywhere like Toys r Us, and probably even places like Home Depot or Lowes. Good luck to you. I hope that will ease your mind a bit!!

Along the same lines as the previous poster, I did a google search and found a lot of recommendation for install window locks so windows can be opened for air but not far enough for child to climb out. I am at work and don't have too much time to search right now, but if you do a search on window locks and toddler I am sure stuff will come up.

there are some things called "first alert". i put them on my cabinet doors to keep my 21month old out of them. they are pretty cheap, and you can get them online. they will set off an alert that will scare your little one if he/she just moves the window even a little bit.

Hi K.,

There are lots of things you can buy, the easiest is to put a stick in along the side. Make sure it's pretty snug and goes from the top of the bottom window to the top of the inside of the frame. If you're really worried, you can put a screw into the top of the bottom window that reaches into the bottom of the top window. After you're done, you can fill it with wood putty and paint or stain. If you want to buy a special lock, try Lowe's or Home Depot. I haven't seen any of that type at Babies-R-Us.

Good luck!!

Hi! there are screen guards and also safety latches for windows. Most Hardware stores or places like Home Depot, Lowes, etc...should carry these. I am not sure of the exact name of these items but most employees of these stores should be able to direct you to the proper item if you explain what it is you need to them :-)
Hope this helps!
L.
PS. If you are renting, some landlords will supply these items to tenants with small children and in some states, I think they are required to have them available if they rent to families with small chilren (at least I know that large apartment complexes are required to).
