Using Paypal to Receive Payment?

I am trying to sell my Limerick breast pump on Craigslist and have a buyer from out-of-state who suggested paying through Paypal. I do not have a Paypal account and have not done that before. Does anyone have any experience good or bad using Paypal to receive personal payment for an item? Any tips? I need advice. Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I've decided to heed the warnings and not complete this sale. I have sold and bought things on Craigslist several times, locally and cash only with no problems. But, I've learned when in doubt, don't.

Hi,
I have a home-based business with a business PayPal account (but things work the same for personal accounts, I believe). Setting up an account is a fairly simple process. Go to PayPal's website, click on setting up an account, and go through the steps. When you are a member, you can "request money" from this buyer. PayPal will take a small cut from the sum given, but for an individual or business who wants to be able to, for example, accept credit card payments, there's no better way. PayPal doesn't charge a monthly fee.

I absoluterly LOVE Paypal, but not in this instance.

Don't use Paypal to receive your payment. The person buying the pump could say they never received it, or that it was not as expected and Paypal will credit back their money and you're out. Craigslist even warns against this, as well as buyers and sellers who don't live near each other or refuse to meet face-to-face (and even that should be in a public place like a McDonald's to avoid any problems.)

IF you decide to go ahead and accept PayPal do NOT give out any information regarding your account to the buyer, and make sure to ship the pump via Priority Mail through the USPS WITH Delivery Confirmation.

I use Paypal to receive payment pretty often and like how convenient it is. I would caution you against selling your pump to someone not from your local area. There are LOTS of scams, most of which involve someone from out of state buying your item. My cousin got swindled out of $3000 selling a car part to someone. I would list the item on eBay instead and there there's much less chance of scamming because eBay is so monitored, regulated and offers protection against this kind of stuff. If you think about it for a second, how did someone from out of state decide to look at your area to find this pump??? It doesn't add up. Please use caution if you decide to proceed and protect yourself.

paypal is great for eBay or for other business, family, friends etc. I'm not sure about Craigslist. I thought they were a cash only, pick-up only type thing. I use paypal for ebay mostly. I used it for family too which worked great. You set up an account and they walk you through everything. You use your email address to tell people how to pay you and you can link it to your bank account or credit card. I have a separate account linked to my paypal since i use it for eBay. That way it's not linked to my personal account. Good luck!!

Craigslist has an ad that says if the buyer suggests paypal or money order it may be a scam. Paypal does work and it's great. I think you can receive payment because I have received refunds, but not sure. I would say to be wary about it because craigslist warns about that. Can't they give you cash?

The only way I will use Craigslist to sell something is

"Local only, cash only"

There are too many scammers out there that will end up taking your money AND your item!

I've sold a couple of items on Craigslist, and I've gotten e-mails from scammers when I've tried to sell them.

I love pay pal and have never had a problem that didn't get resolved. Paypal has been great at protecting me. Craigslist is kind of scary. The people on there aren't honest, as a whole. It was great back in the day but has been infiltrated with losers and scammers. I would recommend bookoo but on the nicer areas. For example, I am about 20 minutes from Naperville but I use Naperville Yard Sales because the clientele seems better than the Aurora ones. Ebay sucks because they take most of your money just in the advertising and shipping. With bookoo, it's free to list and you figure out how you want to exchange the purchase. As for the other Mom who wondered how someone out of town would find you. It's easy, they could have done a google search for the item they were looking for and put in the words craiglist. From there, it shows you all of the places that are currently posting that item. I buy out of state from time to time if I can't find what I am looking for.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Yes, good experiences. Just make sure you have the paypal money before you ship - keep it for 48 hours in case they challenge the money that was sent.

I am a long time PayPal user.
I understand if you are a first time user, that you would have reservations. Especially if you are using a "local" buyer only site.
However, for the people who are totally wrong and misinformed, PayPal is completely safe. And furthermore, it is the BUYER who should beware.
As a buyer myself, who has approached other cities Craigslist. It would be ME, paying YOU. While I send you my hard earned money. You may just send me an empty box with a tracking number. As long as you provide tracking, I am SOL.
And if anyone reads the rules of PayPal, and I am TOTALLY surprised and taken aback at the answers given by regular PayPal users here. Your personal information is not given out. Other than your name. But if you are legitimately trying to sell an item, and get money for it, wouldn't you provide your name if asked for a written bill of sale (receipt)?
Another thing, I also have pointed out to the leery and weary, wouldn't you rather ship your item out and never have to see or deal with someone's face. As in, A STRANGER coming to your home where you and your CHILDREN reside????? Hello???
I think the advice given here comes from people who have decided to look at this from a very one-sided point of view and have failed to realize that PayPal is there for that reason EXACTLY. To assist you in getting money over the internet, quickly, and easily into your account. Trust and safety knowing that they protect fairly and equally to both buyer and seller. They want the seller to provide tracking, and for you PayPal users, you should already know, they verify your bank info and your info before they allow you to use their accounts. And they are very thorough. They should be applauded at their effort. I am a very satisfied member of PayPal, it is obvious I know because they have taken care of me and my transactions VERY WELL.

Craigslist can be great, but cash only. I usually make sure my husband is around when the person is coming over. I did meet someone 1 time at a public place because they were from out of town, but usually they come to my house.

It is very safe. You align it with a
Checking account. Pay Pall takes a service fee, ( very small) but if
the buying person wants to use debit or credit, they can do that, You get the money auto deposted in your account.

It is a safer way for you. They buyer can use what ever method they want and you don't have to worry about bounced checks.

I use Paypal to accept payment on Ebay all the time. However, they "skim" a percentage of the payment when you move it to your checking/savings account.
