I wanted to get some advice, im pregnant with our first baby after trying for about 3 yrs and we are so excited, we will be expecting our blessing on september 3rd, my concern is, me and my husband have been getting into these arguments because i dont like vegtables never have, i do love corn but my doctor has told me that is a starch, im starting to drink v8 daily, but other then that, i cant eat vegtables, i will just throw them up if i try. My husband thinks im being selfish and im not caring about the baby, but i do so much and i would never do anything to hurt him/her. I take my prenatals every day and have never missed a day even a couple months before i got pregnant, i dont drink or smoke never have, and i think i eat good except my vegtables, please help with any kind of advice, i scared if there is anything wrong with our child my husband will resent me forever, and i dont want him too if heaven forbid anything is wrong, i dont know what to tell him, i feel he is stressing me out so much it could hurt the baby more then me not eating my vegatbles. He is a wonderful husband and he will be the greatest father dont get me wrong, he just wants a healthy baby, so do i, any advice that i can tell him would help me out so much

First of all, I'm sure you are taking prenatal vitamins, right? There is no way not eating vegetables will harm your child, so don't worry about that. The nausea that most mothers feel during the first trimester usually prevents them from eating just about everything, and babies miraculously turn out just fine. But that being said, it would be a good thing to try and learn to like at least some vegetables, for you, and as a model to your child when he is a toddler. Eat the corn, corn's a vegetable, even if it is a starch. Is there anything else you like? Can you eat any of the dark green leafy veggies? Spinach or broccoli? How about steamed with butter and salt? Maybe try some recipes and see if you can learn to like veggies a little at a time. Meanwhile have the doctor reassure your husband. It's hardly good for the baby if you make yourself vomit.

Hi, I have 5 kids. From what I've studied, your body takes nutrients from YOU, to make sure tha baby gets what it needs. Life really is a miracle! A nutrition-nut friend of mine "hides" veggies in everything for her kids; like- add pureed carrots/sweet potatos/spinach into chili, pureed beets or zuccini into chocolate cake etc, and buys baked veggie-chips, soy chips, etc. Involve your husband in this! So, 1)He knows you're getting the veggies and will let up (stress isn't good for you or the baby), and 2)So you're "clueless" as to what GOOD things are in it and you'll get it down. Remember whole grains (whole wheat, brown rice) and bright/dark fruits and veggies are the best! (Blueberries, broccoli, sweet potatos) I very highly recommend the book "What to Eat When You're Expecting". The recipes have no added sugar and LOTS of suggestions for getting in all the best foods. Congratulations and good luck!

Hi L.,

What about just trying to incorporate a salad a day. Even though it will be hard for you- you need to do whats best for your baby. Also, check GNC vitamin store and ask for a fruit and vegetable supplement- I know they are out there-- its not to replace veggies, but it will certainly help if you can't eat the vegetables. Good luck and congrats on your upcoming baby!

Hi L.,

Hiding your veggies in the foods you eat sounds like a great idea. Personally, I think what you are doing now if just fine, but hiding your veggies might take some of the stress away from your husband.

I've made a few meals from "Deceptively Delicious" that were quite tasty.

Good luck :)

L.,
The next time you go to your doctors appt. take your husband along and talk to the doctor about not eating veggies... Your Dr. will know how it will effect the baby if at all, as well as what you can do to still get the vitamins you and the baby need. (during my last pregnancy I had horrible morning sickness the whole time and could only eat red meat, eggs and white rice and bread) ot I would throw up. My daughter turned out just fine.
Good Luck

I don't think you should have to eat anything that makes you want to throw up. One lady said eat a salad a day. I personally would rather die than eat a salad. I don't especially like vegetables, but I will eat some cooked ones. I ate as healthy as possible when I was pregnant, but didn't completely cut out caffeine and my daughter is perfectly happy and healthy. I think that drinking a V8 everyday should be sufficient and just add in extra fruit if your concerned.

Hi L.,

Have you heard about Mona Vie? It's a blend of 19 fruits including the Acai berry and it has the antioxidant equivalent of 13 servings of fruits and vegetables. It tastes great (even my 4 1/2 year old drinks it) and it is perfectly safe for pregnant women. It helps with inflammation too so decreases sciatic nerve pain (something I got during the end of both my pregnancies). That might be someplace to start! You can't get it in stores, it is sold through independent deistributors. I sell it and I have seen business postings from other people on Mamasource as well.

Hi L.,

I gave a suggestion for your problem that I would really love to propose to you as an alternative that may suit both of you. How do you feel about fruit? If you like fruit, I have a juice that you can drink that will give you the nutritional value of 5-9 fruits and vegetables a day and it's delicious. Have you heard of MonaVie? It's great for the energy, it's 100% natural and DELICIOUS. It's a great antioxidant, great for your skin, gives natural energy and is great for you and the baby. Would you like more information??

Hi L.,
That sounds exactly like what my husband used to tell me when I was pregnant with my first child! I had AWFUL morning sickness (which is such a joke, because really it was all day and night sickness) and I only wanted to eat oranges and Saltine crackers. And even so, I would throw those up. My husband became very concerned and would make these big dinners - broccoli, chicken breast, rice, etc, and I would take one look at the plate and go throw up again. He accused me of not wanting to have a healthy baby, and he also thought that I was afraid of gaining weight from the pregnancy.

Finally I took him with me to the doctor's office and had the doctor tell him that it wasn't that I was trying to thwart him or damage our baby, it was that the hormones that sustain pregnancy also make you sick to your stomach! After that my husband finally understood that whatever I felt like eating, was what I should be eating. Things went much better after that!

Just remember, as long as you are taking your vitamins and eating what you can, you will be ok. If you like fruit and can stomach that, eat fruit. The whole point is to get nutrients into your system as best you can.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!
