I have many old VHS tapes and some 8mm tapes I would like to have transferred to DVD. Does anyone know of someone who does this on the side or a company with a reasonable price?
N. - if you find a place that does the 8mm tapes would you share it with me. My mom died when I was a child and I have several tapes that I'd like to put on DVD so I can share them with my son when he's older. Thanks.
Not sure how many you have, but they sell machines that take your VHS tape and put it on DVD, you can get them for around $150 so depending on how many you have may be worth it.. I was looking at them at Best Buy.
if U have a camcorder...here is a "how-to" site...if U wanted to do it yourself....U just connect your camcorder to a computer and upload the video....if it's vhs...u would connect the vcr to the camcorder...and camcorder to the computer...most camcorders are already equipped to do this..
I take mine to walmart it is 19 dollars a tape and they send it off it takes about 3 weeks to get it back I do it all the time and you always get your tape back

That is the only place that I know of. I just saw them advertise, so I really don't know how good the service is either.

They will also archive your photos and I think your videos for life incase you ever have the unthinkable happen and loose them you would still be able to get copies of them so they are not lost for life. Give him a call and if you use his services you will not be disappointed!
I saw recently in a Walgreen's ad that they will transfer VHS to DVD for $25. Not sure about 8mm though.

Wal-Mart sounds like a good deal from the other poster... if you're just transferring and doing no edits. I think I'll try them.

I can do this for you....both VHS and 8mm to DVD. For straight video to DVD transfer, it is $25 per tape. I also scan photos, slides, and negatives...anything associated with photo/video preservation.
Something I do provide that the average service does not provide:
- custom color DVD case
- custom color DVD label (not adhesive!)
- custom interactive DVD menu
- DVD chapter breaks

During the holiday's I saw a notice that Walmart does the 8mm transfer. I haven't used them yet, but I have a few 8mm that my mom gave me of my childhood days. I know the biggest issue with 8mm is how the tape is handled. You want to make sure the person doing it can clean and handle it properly - especially if there are any broken frames. We did transfer a few from a person by browsing online and it was a decent job, but the customer service wasn't all that great so I'm not recommending him. I'm sure it will be the same way for Beta tapes as well.
VHS to DVD transfer is going to be a lot easier to find and you can probably do it yourself with the equipment that was mentioned earlier. If you want to have introductions and scene selections, I've forgotten the name, but on the east side facing 75 in Richardson I've seen a neon sign for a company that will do data transfers. Might be worth a shot to check them out!
