Hi Moms,
My DS who is 4 has been battling a horrible upper respiratory infection all week. He has been coughing constantly and can barely get any sleep. Its finally starting to go away now (I think). I would like to try to boost up his immune system to avoid him getting sick constantly. He gets 60mg from his daily multivitamin in addition to fruit and juice. I'm thinking of giving him an additional supplement. I've seen Lil Critters makes one with C, zinc and echinachea. Is this too much C? I just can't stand seeing him going through this again and although it might be unavoidable I'd like to do what I can besides the handwashing. Anyone have any advice on this? Thanks!

Vitamin c is best absorbed over time, like with antibiotics. It's best to give it spread out through out the day and night. Vitamin C is not stored up in the liver or the fat like other vitamins are. You can not give him too much PERIOD. You can give him diarrhea if you give him too much. Go slow and work up to 3000-6000 miligrams per day and that's awesome.

It is very, very difficult to get too much vit c! Even some hospitals use megadoses in iv drips :) Just like the others said, spread it out if you need to.

You could also try things like turmeric (the spice) in foods - Turmeric is a natural immune booster. Garlic is another immune booster. Also make sure he gets plenty of sleep at night every night
I hope your little one feels better soon

C is the only vitamin you can't OD on; however, you can have a lot of problems if you don't get enough of it. The excess just gets excreted through the urine. It is also heat sensitive, so when you cook a pepper..the C gets "killed off." My mom used to give me 100mg of chewable vitamin C.

I was told by a manager at my local health food store that vitamin C doses should be spread out--the body can only process so much. She said if I gave my kids too much, they would likely get diahrea. My kids were so sick last winter, and last week I ended up in the ER with my son, and it's only fall! I asked my pediatrician if there's anything I can do. He recommended that I give them a probiotic everyday, since most of your immune system is in your intestines. Also, he said to give the herb astragalus everyday as an immune enhancer. So I ordered both (kids versions) from iherb.com, and they weren't too expensive. In addition, the health food store manager recommended a multi-vitamin, and vitamin c. I do feel like I'm giving them a lot, but I don't care. If it will help, I will do anything. I am due with baby #3, and cannot endure another winter, healthwise, like last winter. Good luck to you.

Vitamin c is water soluble meaning if it is too much he will pee out the extra. Expect more yellow pee than normal.

I would not do it. You can overdose them with too many vitamins and I do
not think you want to do that. At 4 they are now playing with other children
and exposed to many germs. Just the way it is. It will get better.

Sorry guess I was wrong. Extra vitamin C will not hurt.

I find that since I started giving my daughter the lil critters immune c gummies , 2 every morning, in addition to her multivitamin, started when she was 5 years old, she gets sick less often. If I run out and she stops taking it now for more than two days at a time she gets sick.

The first year of preschool my kids were sick all the time. Last year, the second year, they took immunity plus gummy vitamins (instead of the gummy multivitamin or on alternating days) and were both sick only once each. It may just be the first year of being in school.

Unless you are getting into the area of 2 grams or more daily with your child, you really need not worry. Both of my boys each get a 500mg chewable per day. When a cold is coming on, they get one in the morning and one at night, for a total of 1 gram per day, but only for a few days at most.

Vitamin C overdose is pretty much impossible unless he eats a half a bottle every day for 2 weeks. That's about how long it takes to cause real damage.

I would recommend vitamin D3 as cholecalciferol. This is a tremendous immune system helper. 1000 IU's daily. This stuff is a MIRACLE WORKER when it comes to staving off colds. Take it easy on the zinc unless you know a cold is coming on...it can upset the tummy.
