You can get vitamin D straight from the sun! It's perfect 10 min. here & there is all you need. I have recently been trying to be much healthier and have not heard of anything needed to help absorb it. Me and the kiddo also take a multivitamin to cover all the basis as well. Hope this helps

The sun is the most natural source, but if you're dark skinned, or live in an area that's cloudy often, or protect your skin with pants, long sleeves and hats, you may not get enough, especially during the winter. Also, freshly-washed skin doesn't contain enough of the needed oils to help process the sunlight into Vitamin D.

Taking D with some fats/oils at mealtime helps absorbtion, since it's a fat-soluble vitamin. And vitamin D itself helps your body utilize calcium.

Here's a fairly comprehensive explanation: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/vitamin-d/NS_patient-vit...

Also, NEWS FLASH: A letter to Science News about Vitamin D suggests that taking it as a supplement may help alleviate SAD, or Seasonal Affective Disorder, the weariness and depression that some people feel during the darker days of winter.

Thats what I've always been told is to spend time in the sun. Theres a science to knowing what foods to eat in what certain combinations to get the max benefit from it and I'm sure there are resources to help figure that out. Google to the rescue! But now, that the brutal heat has disapated and before winter comes, I'm trying to get a little sunshine.

Well, I live in sunny So Cal and am in the sun quite a bit at our lake, at the beach, gardening, etc. Just had a physical and my vit D levels were acceptable, but on the lowest end of acceptable, so my doc recommended 1000 mg a day which I am now taking. I guess my point being, I'm in the sun quite a lot and it still wasn't enough. I was surprised.

I had gastric bypass and take alot of vitamin d3. 5000iu. Its a little pill and it helps with my depression too. I also take vitaminb complex a monthly b12 shot and multi vitamin along with calcium. Before surgery I took 1000iu of vitamin d3 and that was enough so we thought. Try it for a little while. It's basically harmless and helps in more ways than they truly have figured out.

I know that vitamin D is necessary to absorb calcium but not anything being necessary to absorb vitamin D. I take Oligo which has been proven by science to be up to 10 times more available for absorption than the Centrum & One A Day. (Traditional mineral forms can crystallize in the intestines, making them difficult to absorb. Oligo helps keep minerals soluble in the intestine—where nutrient absorption takes place.)

Many people, even those in sunny areas are deficient. So taking the 1000 mg per day is suggested for just about everyone. I have not heard of another nutrient being needed for it to be absorbed. However, it would probably be a good idea to also take a calcium supplement that also contains manganese and magnesium.

Hi.
Our pedi prescribed Vitamin D drops for our son to help boost his immunity...he is the best in our area, and did not say he needed anything else.

Most of the time Vitamin D is added to milk as it works well with calcium.

The sun and supplements, it is most beneficial to absorption to take it with a calcium supplement. Especially if you have a deficiency. I had a vit d deficiency and it was a total nightmare. My Dr put me on both vit d and calcium supplements.
