Vitamins for Toddlers

Hello,

I remember reading some posts regarding vitamins and toddlers. Specifically I remember some posts warning us that vitamins can be more harmful than helpful- can this be true? As my Sweet Pea gets older, she is getting more and more picky and I am finding it difficult to get her to eat her veggies and other healthy foods. I thought a daily multi-vitamin (like Flintstones) may pick up the slack, but I recall reading some warnings. Any recommendations on what vitamins are good or bad are more than welcome. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I think you are thinking of some lead warnings in vitamins but if you are using Flintstones, they were not on the list I am thinking of.

Flinstones makes a great vitamin for 2 and under that way she wouldn't be getting to much in her system, all my children used them until they were 3 then I moved to the regular flinstones and they all did very well with them. Hope this helps.

My 4 year old daughter takes gummy vitamins but I recently found out that her iron was low and that most vitamins don't have iron in them. So I purchased a multivitamin with added iron and switch them up. You have to be careful not to constipate them too. She eats pretty healthy so we just give her vitamins once in a while. We but them from a health food store to make sure we don't have to many extra added ingredients. Good luck!

Good Question!

I have been adding extra vegi's by using a cook book called "The Sneaky Chef". I also intend on buying the new one out by J. Seinfeld on adding pureed vegi's into your child's diet (and everyone else in the family too for that matter!).

My son is a good eater, but I figure it can't hurt to give him that extra boost. They recommend 5 servings of fruits and vegi's a day, and that is just a lot of food!

Good luck!

My only advice is to check the labels because I've found well known Children's vitamins that have ASPERTAME in them! How unbelievable is that? What's so wrong with sugar these days that a darn vitamin for kids can't have a little of the real stuff :o)

Good morning R.:)
I know how hard it is to get our kids to eat properly and to take a vitamin to ensure they are getting their proper nutrition. I have 3 boys and their pickiness changes daily! One day they like something the next they hate it.
I can offer an option for vitamins for you and your daughter. I am an Arbonne independent distributor; check out www.arbonne.com and give me a call. I can order you a fantastic vitamin powder for kids that can be mixed into a bottle of water. They think they are getting juice and we know they are getting the proper vitamins and nutrients they need to stay healthy. Arbonne products are not Pharmaceutically based; they are botanically based so there are no harsh chemicals or additives. Best yet, kids like it! Please call me if you have any questions or if you'd like to give them a try.

My son is 15 months old, and I give him a vitamin. We use Melaleuca's Aussie Pals (they're iron free). He loves them, and I'm comfortable with them and the research behind them. I am VERY careful about what products we use in our home because I do worry about the effects on our health. I'd be happy to share what I know with you. ____@____.com But FWIW, the food today (and honestly - our diets in general) are less than stellar. I know ours is pretty awful on occasion. Even though my son eats much better than DH and I do, I still love the peace of mind knowing that he's getting everything he needs on a daily basis.

HI R.,
I have the same issue with my son. I give him V8 Fusion. I give it to him with his breakfast and once in the afternoon. It has one full serving of fruit and one full serving of vegetables in each 8oz glass. He loves it because it's juice. So, at least I know he's getting a couple of servings of each. It's so hard, isn't it?!! I'd be interested in the warnings too.
Good Luck!!

I think you just have to be careful with the amount of iron in vitamins, I've heard kids could eat the whole jar accidently and the only thing that would be harmful is the iron. I think my daughter took a vitamin without iron but I could be wrong. We did the gummy vites.

we use kid vitamins by noric naturals, they taste good and are really good for you. they are called nordic berries. Also there is a good kids chewable/melt away fish oilsvitamin that tastes like strawberry.. but excellent and very kids friendly... i wouldn't do flinstones.. or a lot of the other off the shelf kind cause typically they don't get absorbed into your body. So they aren't doing the job they ought to. And I wouldn't think by taking a multi vitamin that you can eat less veggies... you would need a greens supplement for that.

The responses that are guiding you to Melaleuca products and vitamins are right on! Great, safe, healthy products. The vitamins are sweetend (so they taste good) with Cherry juice! Many vitamins simply move through our bodies with very little nutrients being absorbed. They have no FDA requirments for vitamins. Aussie Pals have a 95% absorbtion rate and are produced with pharmacudical standards.
I also heard of a book on Oprah yesterday written by Jerry Seinfelds wife. It is called Deceptively Deliciouse (sorry If the spelling is off). She "hides" veggies in everyday meals. I'm definately going to get that book!

Hi R.,
I've given my girls (who are now 12 & 8) vitamins since they were babies because food doesn't have the nutrition in it that it used to. I give them Shaklee's vitamins because they are proven to work and screened for harmful ingredients (like e-coli and lead, etc.) I actually started with the cleaning products because I didn't want toxic products around my kids. I was a computer analyst when my kids were born and was looking for a way to stay home with them. Now, I help other people with nutritional issues and help them get rid of their toxic cleaning products so I have my own in-home business with Shaklee. You can view their products at my website: www.CherylElijah.com or I can send you out the catalog too.

My husband is a chiropractor and has access to all the "professional brands" of vitamins. We just haven't found anything that works as well as Shaklee or that's money back guaranteed like Shaklee is.

I'm not sure about vitamins being more harmful than helpful, unless perhaps you use the vitamins as an excuse to just eat whatever the heck you want to, and as a result end up with health issues from a poor diet...However, as mentioned, you -do- need to be careful with the iron because it is pretty easy to overdose on, especially for a child. But as long as her diet isn't already very iron-rich, and you kept the vitamins well out of her reach, and follow the dosage instructions, I would think you'd be ok.

The one thing I do remember seeing a little bit about on the news (but I don't think I ever saw the full story), wasn't really about vitamins being harmful, but some of them not really providing much if any benefit due to just sitting in people's intestinal tracts and not being digested. I would think with a children's vitamin, which would most likely be chewable, that wouldn't be much of a concern - although it probably couldn't hurt to check that out either.

Hope that helps! :)

We started giving our daughter a 'My First Flinstone Vitamin' at around age 2. Those are gentler on the stomach and are designed specifically for toddlers yrs 2 and 3. Giving her a vitamin everyday is also a great way to get her to cooperate when it comes to medicines as well, like Delsum or perscribed medicines when they have been needed.

Look for vitamins that are GMP certified (Good Manufacturing Practices) or Pharmecutical Grade. Nordic Naturals and NOW products are great and can be found at Coborns.

I buy vitamins at Mississippi Market. My son gets one gummy bear multivitamin made by Nutrition Now, one zinc lozenge (same company), and 2 cod liver oil chewable gel caps by Nordic Naturals. We work at a getting a balanced diet into him but he won't eat sauces, cooked vegies, or leafy greens. This combo of vitamins has kept his immune system very healthy. He rarely gets sick and if he gets a cold it lasts 1 day (seriously).

Avoid vitamins with artificial colors and tons of artificial sweeteners.
