I believe you have to register again. Below is the link for California.

As someone else pointed out it won't matter for the upcoming election as the primaries are over.
How do you change your voting status?
For example, some family members (all the same party) want to change to the other side of the coin (other party).
I had no idea what to tell them. I've never changed.

You just fill out a new voter registration card. Put all your current information, including the new party affiliation. If there is a box that asks whether you've been registered before, check yes.
Honestly though, it doesn't matter at this point. Party registration gives you access to party specific elections (ie primaries) and let's you serve on your party's committees if you want to seek those positions. If all you want to do is vote for a particular candidate, you can do that regardless of what your registration says.

Tell them you did and vote for whomever you feel will do the best for you and your family!
why do you have to state your party?
You get the ballot with whoever is running on both sides, right?
Each state has different voting laws.
Some allow open voting, across party lines. Others require you to register as a Republican/Democrat/other. Check the election laws in the state of CA to find out how to make the change.
I think you have to re-register to vote and change it on the voter registration.
for the Presidental election in November, everyone (REP/DEM/IND) will all use the same ballot and be able to vote a straight ticket (all for one party) or vote across party lines. You do not need to change your status for that election.
