would you get the accidental insurance warranty thingy for a DSI ??? a new DSI. It's $45 for 2 years. Getting the warranty puts us over budget. mythought is if they drop it and we don't have the warranty it's useless, I'd rather take back a few other gifts to be able to afford the warranty. Hubby thinks it would be to hard to convince the company it was accidental and too much hassel to get a replacement, plus he doesn't want to take ANYTHING back to stay in budget.

sorry forgot, A cllutzy 7 yo and a responsible 8 yo. I plan to use it on road trips and worry because we can get a bit messy in the back seats on trips and thing sometimes fall out at rest stops when they really really really got a go.

in general they aren't rough on toys, but this seems delicate to me.

So the first two responses are voting no.

What can I do next?

nope. the only thing we got the warranty on was our appliances.

If they break it - it's their bad - not yours. Learning lesson - an expensive one - but a lesson. My kids know I won't spend money like that to have them mistreat it.

I say no way....if your kids are that rough on toys - find something else.

How old is your child? Both my kids had DS lites by age 8, and they never broke due to dropping. They did get dropped in the floor board of the car I guess, but not around the house. For a DS Lite, the repair cost (pretty much ANY repair) is around $80, if they haven't changed it. And hinge related issues (not due to obvious dropping, but maybe pushing the hinge too far back a few too many times?) would have been covered without the "accidental damage" coverage. It was all we ever had issues with, but it was after the one year was up. With any repair they automatically give you a "new" one year warranty from the date of the repair forward.

ETA: And I am not a warranty purchaser either. I NEVER buy a warranty. I pay with a credit card, to automatically extend it via the credit card... but that's about it. Not even on appliances. I have never had one break WITHIN even the extended warranty periods anyway.
ETA Again: If the lap thing and getting out of the car is your big worry with those, then definitely I vote NO. Ditto Purple Mom: I ALWAYS give my kids warnings that they need to "put up" their things when we are getting ready to exit the car. :) When I pull into Target, I want to get out of the car, not sit there for 5 minutes waiting on them to deal with their "schtuff". :))

The warranty did not work for my son's dsi. They told us it was against manufacturer defect not water damage..lol Hope this helps.

My experience is you have to jump through hoops to collect on toys like that; not worth it. As for getting out of the car, we do a lot of road trips so I've learned. here's a tip: give them a five minute warning to get everything off their laps, etc. so when you do stop they'll be ready to hop out and things won't fall out with them. I've used this strategy with my kids, turning it into a sort of game, and it works great!! Plus, it takes their minds off having to "GO" for a minute!! Good luck!!

My daughter is getting a 3DS for Christmas this year and we did purchase the 2-year warranty for $40 at ToysRUs. She is a responsible 6 year old but things happen and in my opinion the extra $40 was worth it.

We have had a DS lite that has been through two kids (one of who is currently 6 and not very careful about anything), it has been dropped numerous times and still works just like it did when we bought it almost 3 years ago. I would vote no on the warranty, especially if you have to return other items in order to stay within budget. The warranties are usually fairly limited in what kind problems they will fix and if they can find a way to blame it on negligent care, they will.
