What Are Your Favorite YMCA Classes?

Hey moms, I desperately need to get motivated and in shape, so over the summer I will for sure be joining the Y. I am a teacher, and commute 45 minutes one way to work each day, plus drop my daughter off at daycare and pick her up every day. I'm up at 4:00, work all morning, get home around 6:00, take care of things around the house, cook, feed the family, give daughter a bath/into bed, then work some more. I have some thryoid issues still going on, and I also have an MTFHR mutation that I am currently not taking any medication for, so I am constantly fatigued (that, plus getting NO sleep at night!) I just can't find the time or energy to go downstairs and run or use one of the ten million workout dvds I own. So, I'm thinking this summer will be great. The district I work for does have a discount through the Y and they take it directly out of my check, so I will feel VERY motivated since it will be payed for. I know that I feel awesome after working out, especially running, but I just can't get myself going. I'm thinking this summer will be great because my daughter can still have some social interaction with other kiddos and I can possibly get myself into shape. Sorry, got off subject :) So back on track....what are your favorite Y classes? I'm especially looking to losing my pregnant belly, tone up, and lose some inches in the thighs, hips, butt :) I wouldn't mind toning up my arms as well. Any suggestions? Thanks!

What can I do next?

everybody i talked to loves the zumba classes but i haven't gone. too intimated by the steps.

I would do yoga in a heartbeat if i had the time and someone to watch my kids who are too old for the childwatch program.

I think most y's will let you join just for the summer, not sure if that is what you meant or are intersted in. I worry that if i start a program over the summer and then stop that all the weight wil come back plus some.

I signed my kids up for swim lessons and would do my own water aerobics in the big pool while they had lessons in the small pool. I would watch them and excersice and we were all happy. I would love to have lasik done so that i could swim laps but i don't see that happening soon.

Good luck to you, take advantage of the meetin with the personal trainer, i think the first one is free when you join. try a bunch and see what you like best.

Fitness Yoga is great - it's a good workout. I just tried PiYo! and loved it - it was challenging, and would be hard if you had never done yoga (it's a pilates yoga mix in a cardio class - lots of movement).

My normal routine on days when I don't take a class is 35 minutes on the eliptical followed by 1/2 hour of weight training. I've been going 4 times a week for the past 6 weeks and can see a difference! I haven't changed my diet, just added exercise. I'm not looking for weight loss, just toning my arms and abs. The weight machines are great for toning, and very easy once someone shows you how to do them.

Good luck!

Good Morning. My Husband & I just recently joined the Y. He is 61 & I am 59. We have a cruise coming up in Aug. and have wanted to get in better shape for a while, this was our motivation. 4 day walking sightseeing and 7 days on the ship. When you join you will have a personal trainer for 4 visits usually a week apart. Tell him or her your goals or want to's. They are more then capable to get you on the right track. Our first week we were shown how to use the cardio machines,2 wk leg, hip & back strengthening, with presses, lifts and curls. 3wk we will be shown the chest, shoulders, upper back and arms. It always makes me feel great. We go 3 times a week MWF, meeting with the trainer on Thursdays. They are terrific at encouragement and never push you to do more then you can. There are some things I can only do a few minutes to start, now I can ride the bike 20 minutes, and walk treadmill for 15. Let the people at the Y get you started then look at the yoga or Pilate's, balance balls, step acrobatic etc... Best of every thing to you it will happen and you will feel great. I love Power Up! It's a hard class and is really getting me in shape. I think if you did Power Up and something aerobic you'd get in great shape fast.

Zumba is the best! Your work out is done before you even know it and it's fun and moves many different parts of your body.
