Hi im new to mamapedia a friend told me to join cause she always gets good advice!!! Im taking ortho tricyclen lo 28 ( the genetic kind) and i started taking them for the very first time in july (never used any form of contraception), and in july 29 i started my period, but its been a week and im still bleeding, can it be the hormonal of the bc pills or something worse? What bc pills do you take and how do you feel afterwards? Any side effects?

BTW: do you have blood clots during your cycle?

What can I do next?

My doctor has me on YAZ, (low estrogen). My periods are VERY light, and only last for about 4 - 5 days. Also, YAZ helps keep my skin clear of blemishes. I'm happy with it.

I take Necon (generic for Ortho Novum). It's also my first time taking birth control pills and besides my tubes have been tied over 10 years.
I was put on them to control excessive bleeding during my monthly cycles which recently had been coming more frequently than once a month and lasting longer than usual 5 days.
I started them on June 14th this year. As I was already on my cycle, it continued 3 days then I spotted another 3 days. Right before last month's officially started, I spotted several days then cycle lasted 5 days which were more like a normal cycle for me then I spotted again several days.
My understanding is that the hormones are causing this spotting which I've never had in my 30+ years of having a cycle. I also have had weight gain(that I'm not able to exercise or diet away), as well as swelling and tender breasts. I also find myself sleeping more than usual but not sure if that's the pills or just the summertime heat drain.
Because the excessive bleeding is under control, I don't complain about these other issues.
Hope it works itself out for you.

I never took anything until this year. I finally started mainly because I was having homonal cystic acny during my period that wouldn't seem to heal up till it was almost time for another cycle. Drove me crazy! I have been on Yaz for 8 months. I love it! Light, easy, quick periods and clear skin!

Seasonique. I have had no side effects. I like these because you only have 4 periods a year, one every 3 months. Awesome!

Hi, I am currently not taking any BC because I am just about at the end of my second pregnancy. I breast fed my son for a year so I was taking some weird BC that was low dosage but when I was done breast feeding my doctor put me on Yaz and I loved it. I took it for three years with no side effects. It really helped with the pre-menstral stuff and my cycles were only three to four days, extremely light on the first and last day.
Good Luck, finding a BC that works for you can sometimes be a challenge.

I took the same pill and yes it did have the side effect of extra bleeding at first. But it did get better. I also was a little more emotional for a few months, again that got better. Just stick with it, the side effects seem to subside once your body gets used to it. Give it three months and then see how you feel. Good luck

Your periods may be a little abnormal until after a few cycles. It may take a couple months for your body to get used to the BC pills.

I think this is pretty normal until your body adjusts. In some cases you will need to find a pill or other method that better fits your needs. I use the nuvaring and love it!

i take the same one except not the generic kind. I tried the generic and my body felt different. it is normal for your period to be 'out of whack' for first 2-3 months until it adjusts to taking the pill.
i have tried loestrim before i resorted to ortho tricyclen lo. loestrim made me retain water, felt bloated and hormonal. this one is the best for me. i don't plan on changing it.
good luck
