Ok I don't want to spend more than $300. I would like to able to zoom fairly far distances. I heard the canon sure shot SD 1400 is nice but its so small.
I wanted a Canon Rebel but its too much money. Please tell me what camera to purchase I am hoping to purchase the camera tomorrow.

The Nikon CoolPix line is excellent...and they have cameras from as low as $100 up to over $2500. Go to a store like Best Buy and check out the different cameras and the different options. I have the CoolPix L110 and I absolutely love it (it was about $350).
I had the same prerequisites as you and ended up buying a Kodak Easyshare. I think model Z8612 with 12x optical zoom. I believe they have now replaced it with model Z950 with 10x optical zoom but the camera is sleeker and not as bulky. It takes great pictures and I could probably utilize so many more features if I took the time to read the manual.
check out the reviews on the Panasonic Lumix FH20. It has super zoom capabilities and great indoor lighting ability. It's only about $150 too! I've been shopping around for a camera and all the reviews said this one was better than the Canon Powershot SD1300! If you can't afford the SDLR's than either one of these would be good family cameras.
I adore my Canon Rebel, and any Canon is going to be an excellent camera. My dear partner found a good used one--older model--on Craigs List, a couple of years ago. He got it for about $200, and gave it to me for my birthday present. Amazing! I've been so very happy with it! He was fortunate to find one that was being sold by a guy who took imaculate care of it and was simply upgrading to a better one. There is nothing wrong with buying an older model, though. Typically, the newer ones just have a few more bells and whistles, but ALL Canon Rebels will give you an amazing picture, good speed of taking it--the most important part of a digital camera is whether you can click on the shot you want and have no delay in it snapping the shot you want--and so many features you may never actually use them all.

I second the Nikon Cool Pix L110. I got mine on sale for $299 at Best Buy. It has the ability to take pictures in black and white, in cotinuous mode (burst mode), and has an amazing zoom! I love it and I am glad I bought it, which is way more than I can say about any other camera I have bought!
