I have seen my PCP and am setting up an appt with a neurologist but thought i'd also ask here. I have been having what my doc calls "Myoclonic Jerking". basically i have twitches, what i call them, where my hands may clench into a fist, or my leg(s) or arm(s) may jerk, or my head or torso or any combo of them together without my control....i have no idea it's going to happen and i cant stop them from happening. i may have anywhere from just a couple a day up to maybe 30 or 40...these arent seizures, just uncontrollable muscle twitches/spasms..they started when i was 19, i am 31 now, but were so rare that i never gave it any thought but they have been getting progressively worse over the past few years until now it's just crazy. have any of you or someone you know ever dealt with this? any one know anything? i'll be seing the neurologist soon and i'm sure he'll do an MRI or CT scan...just looking to not feel so alone about this. it is pretty embarassing when it happens.

What can I do next?

You could have a magnesium deficiency. Please do some research on this as it applies to your disorder-you will be amazed. And NEVER expect a regular doctor to either know or advise that this kind of thing could be a problem. My son had chronic eye blinking/twitching that was cured IN 3 DAYS with magnesium supplemetnts....after he had been to 3 doctors who said it was a 'tic' and that it would resolve itself. Had I listened to them he would still be having a problem. You need to take your health in your own hands and actively look at alternatives. So I would at least give it a try....it is not something that could harm you at all so why not.

Susan:

My dad's hands shake - i thought it was Parkinson's disease...but they don't know what it is..have you been checked for Parkinsons?

i'm not a doctor so I would just start documenting and if you have a video recorder - record an episode so that a doctor can see it...

GOOD LUCK!

I just googled it and it seems to be a symptom of around 21 different diseases including Parkinsons.

I would try to relax until your appointment. I know easier said than done but it just doesn't look like even people's stories are going to give you any idea what is going on with you. Heck, reading some of this stuff may scare you more.

Good luck.

What about Turette's? Maybe a mild form?

I'd second the idea of checking out mineral deficiencies. I had a friend who experienced 10 years of chronic pain. Turned out it was a severe selenium deficiency. Once identified, she cured it in a week.

Remember that nutritional needs vary wildly, as do absorption rates. You may *look* like you're getting enough on paper, but actually be severely deficient.

I would recommend seeing a natural health practitioner such as a chiropractor or naturopath. (I'm a chiropractor). You may be able to treat these symptoms with supplements. I'd recommend starting with Calcium and Magnesium; I'd also recommend taking Taurine (.3grams per kg of body weight per day), avoiding all aspartame and MSG; also recommend taking Epsom Salt baths (1-2 cups Epsom salt in a tub of hot water, soak 15-20 min 5 times a week). See if that makes any improvement. You may have other vitamin deficiencies that can be easily treated...but I recommend always going natural first!

I would say to also look into a naturalpath practioner~ They always are very thorugh and it is good to have a second opinion. Good luck! I hope its something as minor as mineral def.

Ask your neurologist to check for Glutaric Aciduria Type 1. My son does the same thing. His Dr was running a bunch of tests and they kept coming up negative and then the lab noticed a spike in his protein level in his urine and called the neuro and asked if he could check it further. He takes Inderol and it does help with the twitches.
