Does anyone do anything special to throw away their batteries? (Like Double A's)
Do you just throw them away in the trash or do you take them to a special disposal site?
I'm trying to be more environmentally conscious and I hear they are not good for the environment in landfills. :) Thanks!

I think lowe's or maybe home depot has a collection box to recycle them. They can definitely be recycled and it's much better for the environment than throwing them into a landfill!! I save them in a container until I have a bunch then find a place that recycles them.

Here is an address to a website that you can type in your zip code and what you need to recycle (incl. batteries) and it will tell you all the places in your area.

They are supposed to be recycled. I know Ikea has a container by the Exit doors. Another option would be to check the Household Hazard collections that are done in each village/town and take them to that.

C.,

Wow, great question! I am so glad to hear that others out there want to be conscientious, responsible consumers. I took a zip lock bag of old used batteries to a Radio Shack here in Phoenix. They told me they only took rechargable batteries. Since most of mine were the single use, alkaline type, they did not take them. I have been looking for another place that will accept the alkaline type. Your question provided the impetus for me to get going and check it out again. I now have two zip lock bags of alkaline batteries that need a recycle home. Many good suggestions
and responses. Thanks ladies!

Glad to see that there are so many options! We save ours for our trips to IKEA, but glad to know that we can drop batteries off in other locations for recycling.
My family and I also use the modern, effective, EASY-TO-USE cloth diapers to help protect our environment. I tried them and liked them so much that I started my own business selling them! :) You can learn more about today's improved cloth diapers at my website: http://www.SimpleCloth.com

Just in case no one else has responded, IKEA recyles batteries. They have a bin in the customer service area for these. They also have a bin for the compact florescent bulbs.

If you happen to live in the Schaumburg area, you might also be interested to know that the Nature Center on 320 W Wise Road collects all kinds of things for recycling: Diskettes, CDs DVDs, jewel cases, videotapes, cassette tapes, computer tapes and case, cell phones pager, PDA, rechargers and rechargeable batteries, printer cartridges, old athletic shoes, crayons, new or used toys towels, and newspaper.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do what we can to protect this good earth that we will be handing down.

These are some great ideas, Also, there seems to be a Walgreens on every other corner and they take batteries to recycle. Just drop them off at the photo counter. (You MAY want to call your local Walgreens just to be sure. My sister-in-law works for Walgreens and didn't know anything about this, but when I called our local Walgreens, they told me ALL Walgreens do it.)

Good morning C.,
I am so glad you mentioned this because it has been an ongoing problem in my community. I live just outside Indianapolis and have involved my mother and her workplace in the 'battery recycling revolution.' Unfortunately, our local waste management informs people to just throw them away in the garbage. Also, many people take their batteries to Batteries Plus to recycle, but my inside source, a assisatnat manager at one of the locations, told me that they just pitch all the one-time-use batteries that people turn in into the trash to be taken to the landfill. This is something that frustrates me. So does anyone know where Lowes and/or the libraries properly dispose of the batteries? Also, is there anything I can do to stop waste management from telling local citizens that it is okay to pitch batteries in the trash??? Thanks for your time, and allowing me to rant.

Check with your village if they recycle batteries, then you can put them in your recycle bin.

We've recycled batteries a lot of different ways mentioned. Our local elementary school collects used batteries as does a local Boy Scout Troop.

Additionally, there is an on-going weekly hazardous waste collection site in Naperville that collects used batteries as well as other materials, located behind Fire Station #4, 1971 Brookdale Road. It is open Saturdays and Sundays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., excluding holidays. If you have questions about the City’s household hazardous waste collection program, please call the Department of Public Works at ###-###-####, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Accepted items include:

*Household cleaners, drain openers
*Paints (oil based only)
*Mineral spirits, strippers, solvents
*Insecticides, herbicides
*Flammables, automotive fluids
*Fluorescent fixtures
*Household batteries
*Unknown hazardous substances

Hi C.,

I know how you feel. Since becoming a mom, I want to do what is the best for our Earth so it's a better place for my son. Now this is going to sound cold and horribly unfriendly to our earth but I asked mt Grandpa about recycling because he used to work as a garbage man. He said "where do you think all the recycling stuff goes? There's only one landfill."
I don't know if he was being totally truthful or not but he also said that the garbage services say that they recycle but most likely they don't.
If you want to recycle the batteries I would take them to a special facility that is made to recycle batteries.
I truly hope that garbage companies don't just throw away those things we think are being recycled.

We are going to get a battery charger so that we don't have to waste many batteries tho we haven't gotten one yet. Also Real Goods(store in Hopland) has solar battery chargers and batteries. You can go online to order too I believe.

Check with your Village, but we put ours in a Ziploc bag next to the recycables and they take them with the recyclable stuff. But they have to be separate from the normal recycling.
