What Do You Think Is Going to Happen Tonight (Election Results)?

For the first time I honestly have no "vibe" which way the election is going to go . . . it's as close, vibe-wise, as I can imagine it being. Both sides seem very convinced that their candidate is going to win.

What do you all think? Will this end tonight, or drag into tomorrow (or heaven forbid the next few weeks)? I remember how awful it was in 2000 so I'm hoping that sort of scenario doesn't re-occur.

And how did voting go for you today? For us we were out in about 20 minutes, and that's only because our Florida ballot was long with numerous proposed amendments.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

IMHO it could break for Romney . . . though it certainly wouldn't surprise me to see our POTUS be re-elected either. In fact almost any outcome could occur and it wouldn't surprise me!

I had a first time voter today - my oldest son! Wow do I feel old!

how do I **WANT** it to go? I want Romney to win.
how do I **THINK** it will go? I don't know. It's going to be a close call.

If we go by the "Redskins Rule" - Romney will win - as the Redskins lost their game on Sunday....and for years - if the Redskins lost their game the Sunday BEFORE the election - the incumbent lost.

It would be GREAT if more Americans would get out and vote. It seems like more people vote for American Idol or Dancing with the Stars than they do for President....pretty sad, eh?

This is just opinion but I think if Obama wins it ends tonight but if Romney wins there is going to be all sorts of lawsuits and what not.

I don't know which way it will go either. I know the polls have been nonsense because you can see there isn't a 15 point spread. It is just which way or how much are the off?

I WANT Romney to win, but I THINK Obama will. My husband says there will be another civil war if Obama wins again. UGH....

I am very confident Obama will get re-elected based on aggregates of the state polls. I think the popular vote is up in the air but it's looking like Obama will squeak out a win there too. I hope there is no issue with voter suppression etc. Ohio would take 10 days to count provisional ballots, if it comes down to that.

I voted by absentee ballot weeks ago but my polling station rarely has any line :D

Here are my sources:

http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/20...

It's very strange to feel so confident and also see other people so confident for the opposite result! I'm curious what others are basing their predictions on...

I think it will drag out but not sure who will win. If I had to guess, I would so Obama but neither would surprise me.

ETA: I HATE that Romney's victory or defeat party will be here in my state. He is SO NOT a Massachusetts guy. Our local news is reporting that as of 4PM, they had 85 private corporate jets (a normal day is about 40) that had landed at Logan, filled with Romney's gazillionaire corporate backers. Turns my stomach.

I think we will still have a country no matter which way it goes.

I think EVERYONE needs to climb all over their elected Senators and Reps and say that we absolutely cannot go through another election with long lines, confusion about the need for voter ID, and intimidation, especially in urban and minority areas.

And we need to educate our population about civics, how the government works, and why their vote matters.

No more Election Day controversies in the 21st century. I'm hearing moderate Republicans and Democrats who have been part of election monitoring in other countries, and they've never seen lines and confusion like this. It's ridiculously unfair.

Can't we all agree on that, no matter how we voted?

My vibe is I think it will be a Romney victory, perhaps even by a large margin. I think he fired up the Republican base since that first debate. I think people (especially military families and vets) are questioning the Benghazi tragedy. I think the tea partiers will be out in force and independents are more likely to swing Romney's direction too. Finally, I think the evangelical vote will tip it his way as well. So many churches have done 40 and 21 day prayers, held prayer vigils, have openly talked about the elections and encouraged people to register and be informed to vote. I know people that never vote that are voting republican and/or voted democrat in the past and are choosing to vote republican this time. However, like you said each side believes their candidate has it in the bag, so it really is a wait and see how this plays out.
Whatever happens though, I wish both candidates a good clean fight to the finish and hope this thing ends tonight!!

I hope it will be decisive tonight. I agree with other posters about doing something about the long lines, confusion etc. for future elections. For us in Calif. (San Diego) it was an easy process and took about 10 minutes. It may be close tonight but I hope for an Obama win.

I am watching the results on TV now, and I am not sure exactly what to think. I am a Romney Fan, and right now he is in the lead, so I'm happy about that...but I am not sure what will happen later. I'm just hoping it will all turn out alright!! I am pregnant with twins that are due next month. I am sitting here thinking, when they are born, then we will all know who the persident for the next 4 years is! It is making me nervous just thinking about it, lol. Best of luck to all the canidates!!

A note to Katie about her friend who couldn't vote because it appeared that someone used her name to vote already:

It could be a mistake by the person who has the list. If he or she checked the wrong name, then that's how it went in.

I'd tell your friend to go back to the polling station and ask for a provisional ballot. That's at least a try. Perhaps they'll figure it out.

Sorry for your friend!

I predict they won't call a winner tonight. I think it will be dragging on until tomorrow and possibly longer.... depending on what the "powers that be" find to argue about in court.

I would love to see a Romney landslide. And really it wouldn't surprise me if there were. I can also see it being a split with Obama taking the electoral votes and Romney getting the popular vote. I just think that the pollsters this time around really don't know what they are reporting.
My husband and I were talking about this yesterday... I know it has only been 4 years since the last presidential election, but THAT election was very different from previous elections regarding turnout. So the polls going into THIS election are skewed by that probably unrepeatable turnout, AND the change in the way the population responds to pollsters in general. So many people don't even HAVE a landline anymore. And with cellphones, if they get called, many won't answer. Or will hang up on such calls. Or lie about their intentions... to intentionally skew the poll. I just don't think the pre-election polling is nearly as accurate as it might have been in previous elections, so it is impossible to gauge where things might go.

I tend to think that the Democrat supporters do not have the intensity that was present in 2008, so their voting numbers will be down. Which will have a big effect in how accurate the pollsters are... I also think that a lot of the media has not allowed the Benghazi fiasco to get any traction in the news, but that doesn't mean that the public isn't following it or aware.

I would love to have a winner late tonight, and I would love for it to be Romney... but I am not expecting to know until maybe tomorrow.

I think it could drag on, and if so, I won't be watching. I'll be watching "The Walking Dead" on Netflix instead.

ETA: I live in the suburbs of Chicago, and went around 9:30 am. I was there with my 3 kids, and was in and out in about 20 minutes. They only had 1 electronic machine, but luckily, there was only 1 other person ahead of me to use it--most were doing paper ballots. What disturbed me is that I only had to say my name to get a card. No id, which I knew wasn't required, but they didn't even ask me to verify my address.

What I hope happens is that we have a clear and decisive election.

I hope that whichever party does not win is gracious and works with the president.

I hope that whichever party does win ask itself what they need to change to not be so contested and to get along with the other party and not alienate everyone who does not pass their "litmus test."

I hope that America will be less divided and that we can enter an age of political discourse in which we don't have to raise voices or make accusations...where the legislature can vote across party lines.

I think it will be close, but feel Obama will win. A couple of my Republican female friends have told me in confidence that they are voting for Obama, but "saying" they are voting for Romney. They feel more secure with Obama and how he protects women more so but do not feel comfortable in voicing their vote to their spouse. I am thinking there are other's like that out there.

Also, the Latino vote wasn't polled as well as it should be. That will account for a lot. We shall see. We can only speculate, but we'll never know until it's all said and done.

Voting was CRAZY here in Virginia!!! I don't know numbers yet, but we had massive voter turnout (at least at my polling place). I lucked out and only waited about 50 minutes. Several of my friends who went later in the day waited 2 hours!

Cheryl - I just heard of the "Redskins Rule" this weekend. I love the Skins, but I was rooting against them on Sunday :)

Speaking of voter fraud (someone below did) - a friend of a friend posted on FB today that she went to the polls and apparently someone had already voted in her name! And there's nothing she can do about it. I guess you don't need to show picture ID, a bill in your name or something like that is all it takes. WTH??

I predict Obama. This close of a race, he's the incumbent and has the advantage. Kind of like the home team having "home field advantage".

I just hope whoever wins will turn our economy around and get jobs back into the hands of the willing and able. And I hope he will be gracious enough to realize half the country didn't vote for him for very good reasons on either side.

Voting was quick. We were inside (I went at 10:30) the whole time, the people were nice, and it was really well organized, as it always is at our location.

I think there will be lots of happy people, and lots of unhappy ones. I'm actually more interested in some of our ballot questions than the Presidential race because that's local to me. I think it will end tonight, but at what time, TBD.

I actually feel that Romney will win. I just think this is too close to call. Most of the time, independents tend to break for the challenger and not incumbent.

I just feel that there is something off about some of the polls in Ohio, PA and Wisconsin. I just think that there is more energy on the side of the republicans as opposed to the democrats but again, this sucker is so close who knows. Romney could win the popular vote but not the electorial college and Obama is president again. Ugh. OR its a tie. So who is president? Well, if Romney is the popular vote, he wins, and Biden is VP. HMMMMM....

I don't think we will know tonight. I think it will be the end of the week or longer. I didn't vote today I went Friday night and stood in line for about an hour.
