What Does Your 6 1/2 Year Old Son...

want for Christmas? What are you going to get him?

I know - it's the day after Halloween... but I enjoy the holidays so much more if I can shop before the rush.

I have no idea what to get my son, and honestly, I don't think he really knows what he wants either. We don't have a game system (and don't plan to get him one), he has asked for some sport stuff but it seems silly to buy it in Dec. in MN (I'll wait till his spring b-day). He LOVES lego's... but we have so many already. He loves Hotwheels, but all the sets seem so flimsy and so expensive for what you get...

Your ideas are appreciated!
J.

I bought my boys a tabletop air hockey game from Land of Nod. I'm really excited about it. I hope that it works great and that they love it! That would be a way to get a "sports" item for the winter.

Also, what about one of those Lego board games?

My 5 year loves playmobil stuff, like the Safari set and zoo sets. That is all he really wants. He is not into super heros or alot of other popular toys. He likes legos and some of the imgainext stuff like the Big boat with the sea creatures. He does love matchbox cars but just plays with blocks and set stuff up. I don't have and sets for them. He loves farm stuff too, tractors and barns and animals...
Hope that helps.

My boys (ages 5 and 8) also LOVE legos and hotwheels. But since our house is also overrun with these, we are looking at hex bugs this year (neat little robot bugs). My oldest just had a birthday and we got him a big Lego Ideas book, he absolutely loves it. And even though we have too many Legos, we are planning on getting the Lego City advent calendar.

Get him books! Books on Legos, books on Hotwheels.

You can even get a book about himself where the pages are of certain categories and you answer the questions about him "If you were a movie, you'd be a drama, action adventure, comedy, etc". If you were a superhero, your name would be (blank)".

My kid wants a drum set and a guitar...he might get just the guitar...

I took my then 5.5 year old to Toys R Us about this time of year to get some ideas. I plan to do the same thing this year. I don't write down EVERYTHING he points to, but I get an idea of what might interest him.

He doesn't ask for the moon and the things he asked for were pretty interesting. For instance, he wanted binoculars ($15ish for the kiddo version). He uses them every time we go to the nature trail.

He wanted an umbrella. OK, he got that too. makes sense to him so I was cool with it.

I got this for my son last year (who was 6-1/4 last x-mas) - he is very physically active, but also loves puzzles, and continues to bring this out a year later and try to solve it. It's challenging enough to occupy him for an hour at a time, but not so hard that he gets frustrated and gives up (like he did with the Rubik's cube.)

At that age my mil got my son a subscription to Ranger Rick, and Highlights. He had a high reading ability and really enjoyed getting them each month.
You could pay for lessons and get him the sports equipment now, even if he can't use it.
we got into more boardgames at that age too.

what about some wood and some real but smaller sized tools like a hammer and nails.

My son still liked art kits and crayola has some fun thinks like the light board etc.

THis year he is dying for some beyblades, and more lego ninjago

I am planning to get an electric keyboard this year for my 6/2 yr old son. He LOVES the one at his friend's house, is very musical, and would like to learn to play piano - we don't have room for a piano, and will be moving several times (overseas) in the next couple years, so a keyboard it is!
I am super excited about this because I know how to play piano and have missed having one to mess around on, and I know it will increase both my kids interest in making their own music.

Our son is 7.5, but last year and this year too it was Legos, Legos, Legos. Our house (like yours) is overrun with Legos, but he will play with them for HOURS. He loves them, and I love how creative he is with them. He has asked for Legos again this year, and that's what he's getting. He also wants some Nerf guns. Happy shopping!

I will second the get him what "he" wants. It doesn't matter if you think it's dumb, or if you don't think it's worth the cost. Stuff is expensive, plain and simple and nothing is really made to last, yes the hotwheels stuff looks cheep, but it isn't actually terribly expensive. You'll waste a lot more money getting things you think he will like and he won't be nearly as happy.

My 6 1/2 year old son is getting an electric guitar and amp for his BIG gift this year. My son is also very in to history, so I imagine we'll go that route with him. Not 100% sure what else, but he loves to be creative. I just think they (my other son is 4) have enough cars, legos, books, movies, games, etc. So it may be a challenge this year.

I'd also say that even if the tracks look flimsy, they may not be. And if it is what he wants, go for it!
