What Does Your 6 Mos Old Eat?

Hi Moms. I'm a second time Mom...so I should know this...but each child is different (as I realize more and more each day). We just started my 6 mos old on veggies. We are still on our first (squash). I'm giving her one serving a day at dinner right now. She has about 1/4 cup of cereal in the am, and four 6 ounces bottles throughout the day. My question is this... do I give her some veggies at lunch too? And how much should I give her at dinner? She seems to want more... but I know most nutrition should be formula/nursing and she really won't drink more than 24 ounces a day.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

N.,
It sounds like you are doing the right things to me. One thing I did with my kids is, when they were hungry enough to eat at lunchtime too I added a small serving of cereal mixed with fruit. They loved it and it didn't feel like overkill on the veggies. I found that my babies loved bananas mixed with their rice cereal (mixed with breast milk). Good luck.

Hi N., I asked this same question at my sons well baby check up (he was almost 7 months) although every baby is differant! My son is a big boy weighing close to 20 pounds at 7 1/2 months. His ped. said I should start feeding him lunch ( i feed him 1/2 jar of veggie 2nd food and he will drink 4 oz of formula too) she also told me to give him a small snack at bed time with his bottle. So as for now he wakes a bit early and gets a 6 oz bottle and goes back to bed, then he gets up and has cereal and 1/2 jar of 2nd food fruit 4 oz bottle, at lunch (see above) and then about 3 hours later a 6oz bottle, and later at dinner i feed him cereal 1/2 jar of veggie and 4 oz bottle, just before bed a little snack cereal i mix it with juice and a 6oz bottle he seems to be full and happy. The ped. did recommend that I feed him at least half of his bottle first before giving him food until he is about 9 months and then give him solids first. If your little one still seems hungry feed her more she is the best judge of when she need more or less!! hope this helps you out, and makes sense!!

Good luck
B.

Sounds like your haveing fun. My daughter was that way, but she didn't like baby food and she was only 4 months old. I started her on our foods at 4 months and she is not a picky eater today and she is 8 years old now. And very healthy. If you choose still to feed her baby food add baby rice cereal to it, only about a table spoon though, and add formula if you need to liquify it more. This is what I didn't with my son who is now 11 years old. But he at baby food until he was 15 months old because he had a hard time switching to our foods. And he is getting better about not being so picky.

I didnt go to 3 meals a day until 7 or 8 months.. You dont want to fill her up on veggies and fruit. Theyare good foods but they do not pack the nutrition that formula does.

At 9 months my son gets 1/4 cup of cereal in the am.. 2 oz of fruit, lunch is 2 oz of veggie, 2oz of a mixed dinner (turkey rice etc) and dinner is 2 oz of veggie and 2 oz of fruit..

He nurses 5 or so times a day..

N. we are similar - I am a full time career working mom too I have a 7 almost 8 month old. Every child is different with food needs in my opinion. my 8 month old is a chow hound and still drinks his 32 oz of breast milk a day! I also make all our own food its so easy and so yummy! If you had any questions about that you could PM me and I would be happy to chat. I do only organic - its really easy with whole food market and plum market. but besides all that recent research suggests no harm in introducing fruits too. And of course if her milk decreases then decrease her food to pick up the milk! So good first fruits are banana, peaches, pear, apple and mango. Good vegis are green beans, sweet potato, squash, pumpkin and avocado. First grains are rice and millet then oats and then after awhile barley then wheat. Family allergies dictate where to go slow. a 6 month old is capable of beggining finger foods (hard to believe huh?) Oatios and fruit are a great place to start! If the fruit is too slippy you can roll it in wheat germ (if no family allergies) and it makes it easier to pick up!
As far as amounts its up to baby! I use food cubes they are about 1 oz each. At six months he ate 2 cubes in the am an 2 at lunch and two in the evening - so 6 oz a day. I did a grain and fruit in the AM - a grain and vegi in the PM and two grains at night. From there I added a 2nd grain and then a second fruit in the morning and then a fruit and vegi or grain in the PM and at night a vegi and sometimes a fruit depending on his hunger level! sometimes we skip a meal if he doesnt seem hungry. There is no right or wrong :)
