My husband and I have been thinking about purchasing a Nook or Kindle for his mother for Christmas this year. We are just going to go with the most basic model, but I need to know what the difference between the Kindle and the Nook is (if there even is one)? Please help! Thanks! :)

What can I do next?

I don't own either. But, from what I know my friends/family has said who owns them, the Kindle is better. No idea why, that's just what I've heard :)

Kindle has a better screen for reading. If you dont buy the Fire or the color screen one. If you are going with the cheaper version the Kindle has less glare issues. Its thinner, the pages turn better, it loads faster, and it has a cool screen saving feature that helps save on the battery time. I would also invest in a Kindle cover to keep it safe from scratches or spills. I had a Nook and I didnt like it, so I went and bought the Kindle, LOVE it and the best part? Amazon made a mistake and sent us two, but charged for only 1, and the shipping manifest says 1 so they dont know their mistake and it was bonus for me and my husband LOL

The kindle is not back lit. Meaning that when you look into it the page is not lit up from the inside. They came up with a new E Ink display. There is no glare. You can read it anywhere inside our outside in the sun.
My 14yo daughter got one for christmas last year and she loves it!
She picks out which books she wants from the computer because it is easier to read and then down loads them. She has read around 75 books since she got it. I got her the kidle last year because it had much better ratings than the nook.
Good luck!

My husband and I are thinking of getting one for both of our moms for Christmas, and I would get the Kindle, no question. I have a Kindle, and I LOVE it. The new very basic models are like $79 now, which is reasonable. You can lend books between Kindles, our local library loans Kindle books, and Amazon now has a lending library that Kindle owners can use as part of their Prime membership, for $79/year with lots of other benefits.
I also prefer the display on the Kindle. Like I said, I love mine, and wouldn't even considering a Nook, though I do know people who have them and like them.

I own an original Nook and a Nook Color. LOVE them! The original Nook (seems to be more of what you are looking at) has an e-ink display - easy to read with no glare. You are able to "side load" .pdf files which is great for some work files I have. It also works for getting titles from sites other than B&N (as long as they are in a supported format ie .pdf& .epevery dayub I believe). LOVE it use it every day!

I think the Nook is a lot more expensive too!

The Kindle works, the Nook doesn't. In experience in our home at least. LOVE my Kindle and the ease of use, battery life, etc. My daughter's nook has never worked. Ever.

I was looking and comparing e-readers this last summer.
I got a Sony Reader Daily Edition (a freebie - 25 yr service award) and I wondered what else was out there.
An e-reader, for the most part, is an electronic version of a hard copy book.
It's compact, has varying amounts of storage, and you can read it pretty much under the same conditions as you would any other book (I'd avoid reading with it in the bath tub, though - there might be a water proof case for it somewhere).
If it's dark enough so you can't read a book, it will be too dark to read an e-reader, so you're night time reading lights still come in handy.
There are a few color/backlit versions of e-readers out there, but they are almost more like tablet PCs.
They tend to be power hogs compared to anything that uses e-Ink and the battery life and recharging times just don't compare.
It really depends on what they really WANT out of an e-reader.
They need the right tool for the right job.
