Does anyone know of some great family activities/ places/resturants to go in Fort Myers Florida? My family and I are traveling down there for the first time. We have a 6 year old daughter and a 3 year old son. Also...any ideas how long the drive is and how we can keep the kids entertained for that long. It was planned for Fort Myers bc we are doing business...so the destination cant change. Thanks for any advice!

Definitely go to Sanibel Island for shell hunting! I would stick to the beach as much as possible as well -lots of beautiful coastal islands around that area or a short drive away. Busch Gardens Tampa is about 1 .5 hours from there.

The drive is going to be 8+ hours.

Sanibel is a great idea. We went to the Bubble Room as children and liked it. Also, see how far Captiva Island is as well. Last time I was in Ft Myers there wasn't a whole lot to do besides the beach. May be some historic sites to visit or even a zoo. Have fun!

Well, I grew up in Fort Myers, but it's changed A LOT since I lived there. There used to be a WONDERFUL BBQ restaurant on the way to the beach. It was right before the intersection where the beach road goes left and the Sanibel Island road goes right. It's called Hickory BBQ. There is of course the beach. There is the Shell Factory if the kids like all kinds of shells.

I haven't lived there in over 20 years. I'll forward the request to my brother who still lives down there and see what more current ideas he has.

I can't believe I forgot about the Edison and Ford museums!!!

I grew up in S. FL & we vacation at Ft. Myers Beach every summer. Sanibel Island is nice, we like to eat at The Bubble Room on Captiva Island for lunch (it's cheaper than dinner w/ 2 kids). Here is a website of other neat places to eat on Captiva Island http://www.captiva-island.com/amrc/restaurants.htm#bubble... There are some mini gulf places, Edison & Ford Museum http://www.efwefla.org/ , Mike Greenwells is an all time favorite for our family. It's located in Cape Coral http://www.greenwellsfamilyfunpark.com/ also sunsplash water park in Cape Coral. I'm sure there is more, but this is what I could come up off the top of my head while my 2 & 5 year olds ask me off the wall questions. :)
