Laptop or external hard drive, whichever was closer. ( I have the pics on both, and those are my most prized possession after my family.)
If your house was on fire, what is the ONE thing you would grab before you run out? Kids, pets and people don't count!
And -- yes--you and hubby can each grab one thing! LOL
Let's assume the kids grab their own loveys!
LOL, Lisa W. -- I asked for ONE thing!
I'm still thinking about this......

this O. is easy for me.
if my kids are outside and safe.
and husband is taking care of his mighty self
then i would grab my NATURALIZATION CERTIFICATE.
actually that would be the first thing i'd think about as soon as fire alarm went off.
so yes, hands down, my proof of citizenship would be the thing to grab. i have heard that replacing, or having a new O. issued for naturalized citizens takes years, hassle, paperwork, and still no guarantee it'd come, i would never take my chances. of course i'd mourn the loss of photo albums, and i would mourn the loss of shoes (funny haha) but i would not think twice
did i answer you correctly
:)
Me: Expandable file of important documents
Husband: Guns
Teen: Purse
Youngest: Juice cup.
Don't think of me as unfeeling. Yes, photos are important but its so difficult getting replacement documents through government that having a file of important documentation is a must to prove who everyone is. I feel this way due to my parents home burnt down in the middle of the night and it was such a hassle for them.
I lost my dad 10 years ago and it was before I got married and had kids so my step dad had a photo of me on my wedding day with a picture of my dad added in the picture.
This is a tough O.....I am tempted to say the "house file" we have in the safe with all the insurance info, as well as everyone's SS cards and such, it also contains all the kids savings bonds they have received every year since they were little...and all kinds of other important things...HOWEVER...knowing myself I would grab all our Christmas Stockings that I hand made and my original that my grandma made me when I was born!
Note to self: Tell hubby to grab house file and I will grab the stockings...that's still O. thing...each!:)
My scrapbooks of my kids. I can't replace some of those pictures.
I would get the locket containing a small piece of blanket from my babies that have passed away.
Photos and family videos. I have to count that as O. thing.
My "Fire Box"; it contains all the important papers, and my kids photo / baby books.
my wedding ring lol. I can't wear it because I have severe ecsema that reoccurs of my ring hand around my finger...on the odd chance I was wearing it I would grab O. of two things, my computer (its the most expensive thing in our house and its a laptop so I would be able to carry it all. or Shuffles, he is the stuffed penguin my husband bought me when we were dating, we went to the zoo for our O. month anniversery. My husband would grab the safe (if he could get it out the closet its pretty buried) when we were first married we didn't have a back account in both our names so for a week we kept our money from our wedding in a shoe box. he told me that better be the first thing I grab if the house catches on fire. I looked over at our then 6 wk old and said sorry son I guess your on your own. my husband said all right fine you get the baby I'll get the money lol
Our Computer tower - It has all our pictures, important doccuments, and a ton of music that I've spent hours of my life downloading.
My boy's baby books.
I would grab our external hard drive. It has every picutre we have taken of our wedding, honeymoon and kids. It also has all of our important paperwork and account numbers.
a picture of my husband, daughter, and myself that was taking on the beach, that is just about a duplicate of my husband and mine wedding picture, everytime I look at it makes me smile, even in my worst mood!!
What's yours?
My dads pink golf hat. Its the first thing to come to my mind!
Our photos. It's technically more than O. thing, but I'm going to cheat because they are right by the garage door (the actual garage door and not the house door that leads to the garage) so I would open it and shove them all out.
That's now officially part of our fire safety plan. =)

This is harder than I thought...
All of my important life documents and a lot photo negatives and CDs are protected in our fire proof safe so I would say my car and if that was already burnt I would say my children's keepsake box (contains art work, baby books, timeless memories and milestone things).
I can actually say I have different things I would grab in different situations and have actually thought about it. If a fire started at O. end of the house I have determined what I woudl be able to grab from the other and vise versa. Hopefully none of us have to endure such horror and if anyone does, post on here and we can all help!!!
im typical.......photo albums and scrapbooks, id also grab my oldest daughters favorite stuffed animal rabbit....emma
Hmmmmm this is a great question. Well when my dad passed away I took his old leather over night bag and stuffed it full of his things. Pictures, his jewelry box, O. of his guns, his hs diploma, and so on. So I would probably grab that. If I left it, it would be like me leaving my dad in a burning house, none of that stuff exists anywhere else.
My baby, I know would grab her squishy (pillow). LOL.
My boyfriend said he would grab my laptop to have all the pictures of our baby because we don't have them backed up. If we did he would probably try to get his 29 ford, depending on if the garage was on fire. =)
Aside from my keys, wallet, and phone that would be in my pockets already... I'd grab my computer! LOL So what if it's a desktop.... I'm sure I could get it... at least the tower & monitor haha
My hubby would either grab his laptop (perhaps he would be helping me with mine too? haha) or possibly some of his military gear lol
DENISE, WHAT'S YOURS?
Lost photos are always something that people experience great sadness over after a fire... so naturally, that is important... that's why I have all my son's photos on USB drives, saved in my firebox, along with bonds, ss cards, and any other important paperwork that I'd want to rescue in a fire.
SO, I'd grab my firebox. Jewelry would be missed, but if I only had time for O. thing, it would be the firebox.
And I do think fireboxes are supposed to survive a fire? Right? But I wouldn't take the chance... not exactly sure what mine is supposed to withstand, and I'd be afraid some of the contents wouldn't make it.
My computer for sure, as mine too has all of my pictures of my family on it, but i cant say there would just be O. thing I would grab. I would also go for my wedding dress and my favorite things growing up that have my childhood memories attached to them. That is really a tough question that I have thought of many many times and still don't have just O. answer.
What I'd want to grab first is ALL my photo albums LOL
I'd probably grab my file with our birth certificates, SS cards, etc. and also my purse. My husband would probably grab as many guns as possible (we collect them)
O.? This is difficult, but know I think about it, I should start keeping all this things in O. place.
My husband would pic. O. laptop
I would pick my wallet.
If I could pick something else would be keys or our bin with important documents.
Thanks Denise, you got me thinking we should have a safety box with all these important stuff, including copies of keys, a credit card, external hard drive, and jewelery.
family photos! in whatever manner they were stored in...computer and such
My daughters baby book with all of her firsts, pics, family info, etc tucked in it
Our external hard drive. It has ALL of our digital photos and home videos... wedding, honeymoon, the birth of our son, etc. Those memories are priceless to me. I would do everything in my power to ensure I had that hard drive in O. hand, while toting my toddler in the other.
Everything else can be replaced, including birth certificates, social security cards, and passports. Yes, it would be daunting and time consuming, but you CAN get those things back. You can never get those photos back if you lose them in a fire.
This is a hard O. and I really had to thin about it. I would say pictures but eveything is backed up on internet. I am going to go with my handwritten cook book. It has recipes I have worked on for years and I would hate to loose it. But if I would actually remeber it is a whole other thing. Thanks though, now I am gonna make sure i back them all up on internet so I dont have to worry:) GLad you made me think ((HUGS))
purse with car keys and wallet, jewelry ( I have it stashed in a safe spot nightly), cell phone
double check the safe to make sure it was closed and locked because it has all the inportant files, collections, etc.
You are right, I can't think of 1. I'd have to multitask!!
Okay, first of all, is the fire in the middle of the night? Cuz I am a naked sleeper, so I would grab clothes!
Now, if it's in the middle of the day....Probably my purse because it has my everyday life stuff in it. (insurance cards, money, ID, phone) But really, I would just be so freaked out about getting out of the house that I would just grab the kids and run without thinking of any material stuff.
L.
I figured everyone would say their children's pictures. You know, their baby pics up to whatever age they are now. That is the first thing I thought of, so that's my answer!
Pictures and important documents.
My Husband would grab the family Bible - it has his lineage all the way back to slave and Native American Days.
I would grab a small diamond and gold wedding band. It belonged to my mother and her mother before her.
My kids favorite Blanket, My cell phone, laptop and keys to the car
I really only want my family out, but you said they were so thank goodness. I guess my laptop bc it has all my family photos/videos on it, along w/ other files. the photo albums will have to just be repurchased w/ the stuff online.
cell phones. All the other stuff is just stuff. Almost any "important document" can be replaced. Photos can't, but we still have our fondest memories. So, I'd grab my cell phone. It may sound HORRIBLE but that has all my family and friends, keeps them at arm reach from me. Anyway they are the ones who would be there for you at the drop of a hat.
