I thought I had seen a similar request a couple of weeks ago, but can't seem to find it now. I'm interested in buying a new digital camera and would like to hear what you think about the different styles. I currently have a Sony Cybershot (5.0 megapixels) that's about 3.5 years old. It takes great outdoor pictures, but the indoor pictures are more often dark/blurry/etc. I also have a little Samsung Digimax camera that I got a year or two ago for my daughter and haven't been very impressed with that either.
One feature of the Sony that I really like (especially during soccer games) is the ability to take 3 rapid succession shots with just one press of the finger. I also like to capture video.
Any suggestions?
I have the Nikon D40 I LOVE it..
it's not as high end as a lot of DSLR's but it gets the job done :)
I am not looking to do professional (as in sell my work) photos but it takes great pics..

I also have the Nikon D40 which I purchased right before the birth of our daughter. It's a great SLR and was recommended by a lot of friends who are heavy into photography as a great "starter" camera for someone looking for a first SLR. It's been great, and the main reason I got it was to not miss shots of our baby that "point & shoots" usually miss because of the delay. Just a caveat, it's not compact, so I find that I don't always take it with me. Thus, I'm currently researching a quality, yet cost effective "point & shoot" that will fit in my pocket that I can always have with me.

I have a Cannon (sureshot/maybe Powershot?) that I just love!!! I believe it has 7.5 megapixels? not sure as I don't have the camera with me at the moment. I have not had any problems with this camera (other than the person taking the pic's, LOL)
It also takes video's which my daughter just loves, and offers several settings for taking pic's in succession or a moving object. The one I use to have if the person was moving it came out looking like a blur or a ghost in the pic.Hope this helps you...Camera's change so quickly but I puchased this one about 6 months ago so it SHOULD still be available?

We purchased a Canon PowerShot SD870 recently, and we love it. It's 8mp and has a very large screen. It has many functions and settings, half I haven't learned yet.
I have also heard good things about the Olympus Stylus (I'm not sure on the model), but they make one that is water, sand and drop proof. With kids that sounds amazing. Plus, it can take a series on 10 sequencial shots at the push of a button- like you mentioned with your current camera. The mega pixels are less and the screen is smaller that's why we didn't choose it.

Try any of the Canon Powershot cameras. I have a Powershot SD750 and it has all the features that your old one has. It's wonderful to use. Easy, durable, has a big LCD screen and takes beautiful indoor and outdoor pictures. Plus, it's reasonably priced at about $200.
It depends on how much money you want to spend. I have used a Cannon G6 Powershot which was 7.1 mega pixels for the last 4 years and loved it about $300. But I just upgraded to the Cannon Rebel 12.0 mega pixels which was $800. If you like Sony's features look at the most mega pixels you can afford and stay with Sony because the operating systems will be similar and it won’t take you very long to get up to speed. That is one of the reasons I stayed with Cannon for my new camera. The more mega pixels the better it will help if you want to crop or blow up any of your images.

I really liked how fast this camera takes pictures. I also liked the quality of the pictures when I used the zoom to take pictures. [During the recent eclipse of the full moon, I took pictures with this camera... if you'd like to see them, send me your email address and I'll send them to you.]
I recommend going down to Best Buy (or someplace similar) and trying out the cameras they have on display. And ask them to put a memory card into the camera, so you can see the pictures (to get an idea on rate of capture) you take while your daughter or husband runs around the store.
