So the earthquake got me thinking about the fact that my family and I don't have any sort of emergency plan or even 72 hour kit that my religious leaders tell us to have. So I was wondering what sort of plan or what do you have in your emergency kits?? Do you have a meeting spot? What do you do when your kids are at school and you are at work?? What happens if like in Japan you are in one area your kids are in another and you can't get to them?? What would you do??
***Sorry 72 hour kit-it has enough food/water/emergency supplies for 72 hours.
-Abby, what if you can't drive? What if you can't make a phone call because the phones are out? I'm really not freaking out here, these are just the questions going through my head. I am one of those overly prepared people and this has suddenly come to my attention so it's now what my brain is thinking about. Especially with all the images from Japan playing.
@Abbie H- I would suggest doing it sooner than just spring time, I have been hearing that that one has sent a wave effect and so there will be more earthquakes because the one in Japan set it off. I live right on a huge fault here in Utah, so I am starting one tomorrow!!!

We have an established "meeting spot" in the even of fire, etc. But that's about it.....I guess I was just gonna go with the general plan of panic, mayhem & just grabbing stuff but maybe we need to get serious.
I have a crate that has a couple of gallons of water in it, several cans of pork and beans and tuna. A can opener and some spoons. Alcohol, neosporine and peroxide. Bandaids, a roll of tp, a flashlight (the shakable kind that doesnt need batterys) a deck of cards and a blanket. Hope I dont have to use it. Its sitting right next to the camp stove along with some cans of propane and our camping gear which includes the coffee pot and a can of coffee with a bag of styrofoam cups.

If you are worried..TAKE ACTION!!! Teach your children what to do..talk to their elders that they are with. I have never been in an earthquake...so, its hard for me to say. Teach them your name, (not Mommy, rather Jane Que) Teach them WHERE they live, (not home, rather 123 Drive, Town, State, zip) If you can, teach a phone number (911, or even an out of state relative)
I have gone through the Flood of '79, Hurricane Allison, Hurricane Jerry, (offsets by Katrina) Hurricane Rita AND Hurricane Ike...that kinda stuff CHANGES you. (there isnt ANYTHING like NOT having electricity, water, gas, ICE,...FOOD!!)
I live on the Gulf Coast in Texas, in case you didnt guess.
Sit and pretend that the natural disater JUST happened...what do you NEED? What do you HAVE to have?
Then ...prepare.
I am one of those overly prepared people...I think it is a west coast thing:) I have enough canned goods in my storage closet to last us six months, no joke. I have 10 gallons of water on hand at all times. I have a kit in the car that would last about a few weeks. I don't even drive anymore, cause it is out of my budget now to pay for gas and insurance-but I keep my car, just in case I would need it to relocate in an emergency. I have an escape plan, and I have managed to be able to centralize my life/work/school within walking distance of my daughters school. I am that paranoid...ummmm prepared:)
scary stuff, i don't have anything, but maybe it's time to get busy taking care of that.
In the San Jose area schools require a list 3 or 4 people deep that they can call to pick up your child if there is an earthquake and you can't get to them for whatever reason. Admittedly we have not gotten around to building our emergency kit. I think this will be a spring/summer project for us. I'm getting pretty nervous with all the earthquakes that have happened around the world lately!
I think I'd have a heart attack if my daughter was somewhere I wasn't when an earthquake happened. I will have a plan with my daughter, but I don't with my parents b/c my dad is one of those people who thinks your overparanoid if you have an emergency kit. I've actually been thinking about getting emergency food and water lately. I actually bought an escape fire ladder and led flashlights a little bit ago. If there wasn't a cliff separating me I'm probably the dope that would go out in the craziness just to find my daughter b/c I'm paranoid
We live in an area that shouldn't be affected by earthquakes or hurricanes, but we have tornadoes and all of us have the potential terror threat.
We have a meeting place that is within walking distance of our house and then we have a place we would meet if we had to go a great distance away form our house (grandparents' house a few cities away or a place in a city that would allow us a chance to get out by any means....planes, trains, autos, near another country's border, etc.)
We keep a kit in our car that has enough food, water, etc. in our car in case of blizzards, or fear of being stranded in the winter. We keep a container under our stairwell where we meet for tornado warnings that has needed things, flashlights, and TOYS.
Whatever the plan, everyone must remember it. Thanks for the reminder to talk about it with the hubs again.
I'm sorry, but what is a 27 hour kit?
I am embarrassed to say I don't have any plan, it makes it work because I know what to do but just never go to do it.
I am glad you post because Dawn B post a point I never thought about, I wonder how they are prepare in my daughter's school?
