My husband and I are planning to stay in Newport and already have a place on the harbor. It's my first visit to Newport and I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for us. Lunch? Dinner? Beaches?

What can I do next?

Eat seafood!!!! Go to the main dock on the east (ish) side...I can't remember right now the name. Anywhere you go to eat there is FANTABULOUS! If you pay a bit more for fresh lahbstah that's ok bc to me there is nothing like fresh lahbstah.

We stayed a weekend there once, in some house owned by our friends' friends, so I couldn't really recommend a place. The house was on the north side (?) where the beachside was really rocky (but beautiful). But the house was within walking distance from the Breakers, which I highly recommend you visit.

When are you going? Anytime in the summer will be extremely packed and crowded. We were there in August and while it was humid during the day it was so nice and cool at night with a great breeze. So dress in summer layers.

They have good pizza there too...and gelato (fancy yogurt style shop). Make sure to sample those.

Newport is SO romantic at night. Plan on taking a stroll on the main drag with your one and only. I hope you guys have a good time!

Walk along the Cliff Walk, between the rows of mansions and the water. You can do one or two mansion tours - there are deals for several of them. I wouldn't do more than 2 in one day as it's repetitive and tiring. One of them has tour leaders in character which is kind of neat. There are a lot of guides on line or at the visitor center when you get downtown (signs everywhere). There's an old section of town too - older than the mansions, including the oldest synagogue in the US. It's small and interesting - Touro synagogue. You can walk by the marinas and there is an interesting vista at the southern coast. Food is expensive but you can do well with a cup of chowder and a shared appetizer. Lots of places with outdoor decks/tables. Rhode Island state beaches are in pretty good shape - no trash barrels, so they give you a bag when you drive in and you have to carry out everything you take in, which is nice. No litter, no flies. Beaches aren't cheap so go for the entire day to justify the parking. Have fun!

I've never been but I'd LOVE to see the mansions of the Gilded Age tour! Google that . . .

Tour the mansions, of course.

Watch Hill is a great beach to visit. You can also take the ferry to Block Island from Pt. Judith, but I think there is one that leaves from Newport as well. We vacation on Block Island every year and the beaches are awesome!

Be sure to get a lobster roll, some clam chowder, and a Dell's Lemonade!
