My husband's the president of a small company and the best thing he ever got from an employee was a long, thoughtful note about what a great boss he was and how much his support/kindness meant to the employee.
So I posted a question earlier about my fabulous boss letting me off for the day 1/2 hour early over the next few weeks. She does this sort of thing every now and then. If it's pouring down rain, she'll come in to my office and say "The roads are going to be crazy right now and I know you have to pick up your daughter. Feel free to leave at such and such time, ok?" That sort of thing. As a mom herself (her kids are in college now), she understands when my child is sick, when I'd like to leave work to go see her holiday pageant, meet w/ the teacher, etc. etc. She's brought in little treats for my daughter, too. Just a genuinely nice person. Honestly, she's one of the best supervisors that I've ever had, and I've been in the work force for 28 years now!
Anyway, I'm looking for a gift idea for her for Christmas. I'd like to keep it under $25; it's my personal opinion that work gifts shouldn't be lavish because I know that can make some people uncomfortable. Knowing her, I think that would be the case. But I would like for it to be special.
What do you think? She's in her 50s; I don't know too much about her personal tastes, frankly.
Thank you!!

I would give her a Christmas card expressing how much you appreciate her and include a gift card for a manicure/pedicure. We could all appreciate that!
Does she like to get her nails done? Can you find out where?
A nice tote/portfolio case?
Really nice umbrella?
If all else--small box of Godiva!
I have a boss much like you described. She's a BIG fan of wine--so I usually go with that...or a scarf...gloves, etc., but we're in PA! LOL
It is quite possible that the best bosses in the world are other mothers!
Ya know what really counts????
A... handwritten note/thank you card... that is not generic writing... but, heartfelt thoughts about how you appreciate what she does and her thoughtfulness about all the things you mentioned.
For me, this is what has REALLY made an impression on people.
I always, hand write a note/card, for EACH person. Not each the same message. And they notice.
It is very appreciated.
That and a gift to go along with it.
Remember, gifts have no 'message' with it... it is just an item.
But with a heartfelt handwritten note.... the whole message of the gift... goes a lot farther. Even it it is with a plate of cookies.
You are so lucky, to have such a human Boss.
Per your mention of her character and age... a well thought woman like that, would appreciate, a hand written card of appreciation and thanks.
Not just 2 or 3 lines of "thanks huh." But, a nice note.
Perhaps a gift that you could have her name engraved on? I once received a business card holder that was silver with my name engraved on it - I thought it was extremely nice and very thoughtful (and looks expensive but is not). You can go to a store like "Things Remembered" and pick it out and have it engraved in one hour while you wait. (they also have ornaments, cups, mugs, pen sets etc...all engravable)
What about an edible arrangment
Maybe have the office pitch in and get her a gift card for Burke Williams right there in MV.
a good bottle of wine.
