What to Get Daddy-to-Be

I have a wonderful husband who is also very hard to buy for. I'm due with our third child in July and I want to get him something special for her birth, but I'm at a loss for what to get. He's a software engineer by day and musician by night. He's also quite the science nerd and is into Asian philosophy. He's not a sports guy at all, and likes very unique things... which is my problem. Normally, I'm a very creative person, but you know how pregnancy zaps your brain! I was thinking something I can maybe personalize? or some kind of keepsake that's not cheesy. maybe jewlry? Everything I've found is kind of girly. He doesn't wear rings (not even a wedding band) doesn't wear a watch because he doesn't like them. He is a nature kind of guy.. he'll wear hemp jewlry or just leather strands around his wrists sometimes... and he'll wear necklaces sometimes.. but that doesn't give me a lot to work with. I've scoured the internet to no avail.

What have you mamas done for your dads to be?

Thanks so much for your input!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Such great ideas ladies. you've definitely helped get my creative juices flowing. So for father's day I thought a gift cerfificate to a car detail shop would be good (we're an on-th-go family and do a lot of snacking in the car) and then I am going to take the kids to Paint and Party to make him a special something or other.. and I decided to enroll him and my son in Karate class together as they have both recently expressed interest. And.. for my daughter and him to bond... well, I'm still thinking on that one.

For the birth of our daughter I got A LOT of ideas from Thinkgeek.com so thanks so much for that website. It is totally him! I got our new baby a shirt that says Version 2.0 and him one that says Version 1.0... which is kind of funny to me but will be hilarious to him. I also got the one's that are written in binary code. I decided to make him a huge gift basket... I found caffine soap and gum and a coffe mug that says Love in japanese and personalized it with our names and thought I'd a little message like "for all the sleepless nights ahead" or something.. and then i have groups of other things i know he'll like that i can tie messages to about our new baby.

I'm still looking for a momento kind of thing.. thinking of having the kids names engraved in a metal guitar pick and making a necklace out of that.

Thanks again for giving me ideas to roll with!

There is a website my hubby absolutely loves and there's something on there for everyone:
http://www.thinkgeek.com/

There's a cool electronic picture frame that shows digital pics and video that would be cool for his desk or something like that.

Good luck!

Does he use a money clip? One year my brother and sister and I got our Dad a money clip with our birthstones set in it. You could choose from a bunch of different designs for it. I'm sure I still have the website we got it from somewhere. PM me if you want me to find it for you!

Good luck!

I did this a few years ago for my husband. He loves chocolate so that was the start of it. At Central Market, they have these chocolate bars that have a differnet emotion on each of them. So I picked out 7 with things like vigor, renew, forgiveness, tranquility, rejoice, passion, and pleasure ... So for each one I found a little gift that matched the emotion and wrote a little expression on the package.

http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Chocolate-Bar-Pleasure-Cocoa/d...#

I got him a picture frame with his brothers in it and me and the pups for tranquility so that he can find tranquillity in the companionship of family.

Sunglasses for vigor because he's so cool and wonderful.

New guitar strings and picks for renew so that he renews his spirit by spending time with his music.

You kind of get the idea...

So each day of the week of his Bday, I would let him pick a gift with the exception of one that I picked out for his birthday (Passion).

It was fun!

R., I would suggest a different kind of gift that's not necessarily material. Being the mommy of two already and one that will make your house very busy soon, I'd use this opportunity to find a babysitter for the kids for the whole night and then plan a date doing all the things he really likes (even if you don't). You'll be showing him for those few short hours how special he is to you and how you desire to make him happy and show your appreciation. I'm in the middle of a woman's bible study with some ladies from church that is about this very topic so it's fresh on my brain! LOL Your undivided attention for this little while will mean more to him than probably any gift you can give. I'm not sure how far along you are but if it's getting tough to be intimate then do something completely unselfish that will meet his need to have that sexual contact (after all, that's how men really know they are loved :-) ). Best wishes, I'm sure you'll get some great advice.

What about going to a pottery place and letting the kids design him something? A bowl (my DH uses his special bowl for ice cream) an "I Love Daddy Plate" that can be used for serving special dinners, a trinket plate to keep his change in...
Or what about special coupons- for a night off of daddy duty, for his favorite dinner, for a car vacuum, for___________...
I have also gotten my hubby a subscription to a favorite magazine.
One time I took the time to come up w/ "101 reasons I love You" and just typed it and printed it- he really liked that.

Good luck, I am sure he will enjoy whatever it is you come up w/!
